Agents of San Mateo Police Department SMPD arrested a man for vehicle theft and possession of a firearm after initiating a pursuit of the 26-year-old suspect, a resident of Oakland.
On April 17, at approximately 8:42 p.m., SMPD officers learned of a stolen vehicle traveling westbound on Peninsula Avenue, later located parked on Woodside near Studio Circle, where officers attempted to contact the driver, but fled.
Officers initiated a pursuit as the suspect vehicle drove through San Mateo before heading south on US 101. The car exited at Ralston Avenue, then entered US 101 northbound, and then proceeded onto CA-92 east, authorities said.
Shortly after entering CA-92, the suspect vehicle experienced a mechanical failure and began to slow down. Just before the San Mateo Bridge, it exited onto a Caltrans maintenance road.
SMPD officers initiated a high-risk traffic stop. However, the suspect, later identified as Dajon Hardy, 26, of Oakland, exited the vehicle with a white plastic bag in his hand.
Hardy fled and ran east toward Highway 92. Officers chased after him and tackled him as he attempted to jump a concrete traffic barrier and merge with oncoming traffic.
The suspect actively resisted officers' attempts to place handcuffs on him but was taken into custody without incident.
Shortly after handcuffing him, officers located a loaded handgun on the ground near the white plastic bag Hardy was carrying.
Officers eventually stopped Hardy and booked him into San Mateo County Jail for misdemeanor
