The artwork presented here by documentary photographer Manuel Ortiz, curated by Pablo Corral an Ecuadorian photographer from National Geographic, is an effort to make visible the invisible essential migrant workers in our community.
Do we ever truly stop to think where the food we pick up at the store comes from? Or who cleans our water waste? Many farmers, cooks, cleaners, and others portrayed here -mostly women- are invisible yet essential for the well-being and functionality of our everyday lives.
These individuals live in the shadows, they had to migrate or seek refuge here in San Mateo County, they work jobs not many are willing to do, -sometimes their work is very hard, poorly paid, risky and unhealthy- and yet are never represented or talked about in the news.
The purpose of this exhibit is to bridge gaps between ethnic communities, to recognize our similarities and differences in a diverse society. Value those who are there, but are not necessarily seen. This exhibit seeks visibility as a means to bridge understanding, therefore connect our community.

La obra presentada aquí por el fotógrafo documentalista Manuel Ortiz, curada por Pablo Corral, fotógrafo ecuatoriano de National Geographic, es un esfuerzo por visibilizar a los trabajadores migrantes esenciales e invisibles de nuestra comunidad.
¿Realmente nos detenemos a pensar de dónde viene la comida que compramos en la tienda? ¿O en quién limpia nuestros residuos de agua? Muchas trabajadoras agrícolas, cocineros, empleados de la limpieza y otras retratadas aquí -en su mayoría mujeres-, son invisibles pero esenciales para el bienestar y la funcionalidad de nuestra vida cotidiana.
Estas personas viven en las sombras, han tenido que emigrar o buscar refugio aquí en el condado de San Mateo, realizan trabajos que no muchos están dispuestos a hacer, -a veces su trabajo es muy duro, mal pagado, riesgoso e insalubre- y sin embargo nunca son representados ni se habla de ellos en las noticias.
El propósito de esta exposición es crear un puente entre comunidades étnicas para así reconocer nuestras similitudes y diferencias en una sociedad diversa. Valorar a los que están ahí, pero que no necesariamente se ven. Esta exposición busca la visibilidad como una forma de establecer un vínculo de entendimiento y, por lo tanto, de conectar a nuestra comunidad.
