San Mateo authorities investigate poisonings

Bay City News

San Mateo authorities are investigating poisonings after three nursing home residents in San Mateo appear to have been poisoned, with one dying after ingesting toxic chemicals, the San Mateo Police Department reported Monday.

Authorities have launched an investigation after an officer was dispatched to the Atria Hillside assisted living facility on S. Norfolk Street on Sunday on a report that a woman had been poisoned.

So far, the investigation has found that three residents of the home care facility were hospitalized after ingesting toxic chemicals. One of them, a 93-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

The San Mateo Police Department is working with the California Department of Social Services Ombudsman, while authorities say Atria Hillsdale has been cooperating with the investigation.

This is an ongoing investigation and police will provide updates as they become available, they said.

Witnesses with additional information are encouraged to contact Detective Sergeant Paul Pak at (650) 522-7660 or pak@cityofsanmateo.org. Anonymous tips can be sent to (650) 522-7676.
