The San Francisco Board of Supervisors on Tuesday approved leasing a downtown hotel to convert it into a semi-congregate shelter to help the homeless.
The city will lease the Ansonia Hotel at 711 Post St. to transform it into a 123-unit shelter capable of housing up to 250 homeless people.
In addition to beds, it will include a kitchen, community room, laundry room, lobby, office space, bathrooms and showers on each floor.
Case management and staffing services will also be available around the clock through the city's nonprofit partner, Urban Alchemy, city officials said.
"We're going to have to all work together as a city if we're going to achieve our ambitious effort to get thousands of people off the streets and into shelter and permanent housing," Mayor London Breed said in a statement.
The approval of the 711 Post lease, she said, not only allows for building on the progress that has been made over the past two years to add new hotels for housing and shelter, but also provides an opportunity to recreate a temporary shelter model that further meets the needs of all of San Francisco’s homeless people.
“The 711 Post model is an incredible opportunity to provide a stable, resourced shelter for those in need and to ensure cleaner, safer streets in the surrounding neighborhood,” said Urban Alchemy Executive Director Lena Miller.
“Urban Alchemy is committed to providing our holistic approach: embracing our homeless neighbors who need safe spaces and embracing the neighborhood so that the quality of life improves for everyone,” he added.
