San Mateo County Sheriff's Office deputies arrested a man who threatened to kill an elderly man with a firearm after negotiations with the attacker, who finally agreed to surrender to authorities.
The incident that took place at a residence in the city of San Carlos, had a good ending, as the victim managed to leave the house safely, the Sheriff's Office said in a report.
According to the report, police officers called in the Crisis Negotiations Unit, the Psychiatric Emergency Response Team and the Unmanned Aerial System were deployed to the area to contact the attacker.
With available resources, officers made contact with Matthew Knorpp, the attacker who was intoxicated and in crisis at the time.
Knorpp eventually agreed to leave the home and was arrested without incident. A firearm and two pellet guns were recovered and seized at the scene.
He was eventually transported and booked into Maguire Correctional Center.
In situations like this, the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office said that unless there is imminent danger or threats to others, officers will conduct pre-assessments, gather as much information as possible and proceed to formulate a plan to de-escalate before attempting to contact people in crisis.
“We understand that the mere presence of uniformed officers can escalate situations, and we will use time and distance whenever possible to assess the best course of action for each situation. Utilizing time and distance allows us to leverage the many resources the Sheriff’s Office has at its disposal to assist in de-escalation efforts whenever possible,” he explained.
