On Tuesday afternoon, Redwood City police opened fire on a gunman on a section of El Camino Real who was traveling in a vehicle with a woman and three minors.

The boss of the redwood city police department, Dan Mulholland, told the media that police officers responded to the El Camino Real area after a 911 emergency call at 3:19 p.m., in which the voice of an upset woman could be heard, but she did not provide any information.

"Our dispatchers were able to hear a female's voice that was emotional, raised, and appeared to be calling out to children who could also be heard on the 911 call. That person did not respond to the dispatcher's attempt to open the line," Mulholland said.

Police were able to locate the caller's vehicle and responded to the scene on El Camino Real between Vera and Roosevelt streets, where officers found a domestic violence incident.

According to Redwood City Police, officers attempted to engage in dialogue with the suspect, but noticed that he, with a firearm, attempted to use the children as a shield and attempted to shoot the woman and/or the children, so the officers responded "with lethal force" against the suspect.

The man was later pronounced dead at a local hospital, none of the officers were injured.

The woman who was accompanying the man suffered minor injuries to her body, which were treated on-site by emergency services. The children, aged 1, 4 and 10, respectively, did not suffer any injuries.

A video circulates on social networks in which the detonations are heard and the officers can be observed at the time of the events.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact the Redwood City Police Department tip line at (650) 780-7110.
