The Edgewood Fire in San Mateo County, which burned 25 acres of grassland, is 90 percent contained, the San Mateo-Santa Cruz Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire CZU) said in conjunction with the Redwood City Department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fire crews have been working since Tuesday afternoon to extinguish the fire that broke out at approximately 2:30 p.m. near the southern boundary of Edgeview Park near Canada Road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Edgewood County Park remains closed as authorities continue to fight the fire.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, residents reported hearing loud explosions just before the fire broke out, the county said.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fire threatened some homes and the sheriff's department issued evacuations Tuesday afternoon. The evacuations were lifted at about 8 p.m. that evening, and remain in effect but only for a few residents. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

California continues to experience longer wildfire seasons as a direct result of climate change. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The prolonged drought that began in January is expected to continue, leaving much of the state in moderate to extreme drought conditions this summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
