Canepa, who sponsored the proposal with Supervisor Noelia Corzo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFoster youth face so many challenges that most of us can\u2019t imagine,\u201d Canepa explained. \u201cWe, as a community, want to help these young adults finish high school and go on to college or trade programs without the overwhelming burden of making ends meet in a county with such a high cost of living.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Corzo noted that foster youth \u201cremain very vulnerable\u201d to housing instability and homelessness as they age out of the system.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cConcrete financial support allows for some relief from economic pressures that might otherwise drive them out of San Mateo County and away from their support systems and friends,\u201d Corzo said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Funds for this program have no spending restrictions. Recipients can use the monthly stipend as they see fit, for education, transportation, housing, food, and other needs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With a secure monthly income floor, participants are expected to be able to better take advantage of the services provided to transition-aged foster youth. These include access to educational and financial counselors and a variety of support staff who will provide linkages to health and mental health services, employment services, and enrichment activities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Board of Supervisors said the first $1,000 direct deposits could begin around the New Year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canepa noted that a disproportionate number of youth in foster care, as well as those who have been in foster care, are people of color, so the program will accelerate social justice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supervisors voted to allocate $732,000 in local Measure K funds for the pilot project out of a total of $2.032 billion.
