Authorities warned the public this week against scammers claiming to be San Francisco Sheriff's Office deputies as part of an imposter scam.<\/span><\/p>\n

These scammers often call residents by phone, threatening to arrest victims for allegedly failing to respond to federal warrants or subpoenas, failing to heed summonses or failing to show up for jury duty, the Sheriff's Office said in a news release Tuesday.<\/span><\/p>\n

Authorities also said these fake deputies would claim that the Sheriff's Office already mailed the victim a letter of documentation and that the victim failed to show up for the scheduled court date.<\/span><\/p>\n

Instead of arresting them, the scammers will demand between $5,000 and $10,500 in payment from victims via wire transfer or gift card, the Sheriff's Office said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Authorities said scammers often call from a fake caller ID labeled \u201cSAN FRANCISCO COUNTY.\u201d One woman fell victim to the scam, the Sheriff\u2019s Office said.<\/span><\/p>\n

The public is reminded that the Sheriff's Office does not charge fees of any kind for telephone calls.<\/span><\/p>\n

Anyone who has received a similar phone call or relevant information is urged to call (415) 554-7225 or 911 in case of emergency.<\/span><\/p>\n
