{"id":20058,"date":"2023-09-29T09:05:24","date_gmt":"2023-09-29T16:05:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peninsula360press.com\/?p=20058"},"modified":"2023-09-29T09:05:24","modified_gmt":"2023-09-29T16:05:24","slug":"cow-palace-arena","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/peninsula360press.com\/en\/cow-palace-arena\/","title":{"rendered":"Cow Palace Arena to become evacuation center in San Mateo County"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_20059\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20059\" style=\"width: 1018px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-20059 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/peninsula360press.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/cow-palace.png\" alt=\"Cow Palace Arena to become evacuation center in San Mateo County\" width=\"1018\" height=\"556\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peninsula360press.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/cow-palace.png 1018w, https:\/\/peninsula360press.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/cow-palace-300x164.png 300w, https:\/\/peninsula360press.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/cow-palace-768x419.png 768w, https:\/\/peninsula360press.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/cow-palace-18x10.png 18w, https:\/\/peninsula360press.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/cow-palace-150x82.png 150w, https:\/\/peninsula360press.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/cow-palace-696x380.png 696w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1018px) 100vw, 1018px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20059\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Google Maps<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>By Thomas Hughes. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baycitynews.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bay City News<\/a>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Cow Palace Arena and Event Center in Daly City will receive modifications to enhance its use as an evacuation center for residents and livestock during a local emergency, thanks to a $1 million infusion from the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The board made the allocation Tuesday as part of its fall budget adjustments, which included hiring dozens of additional county employees across different departments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The stadium, built in 1941, will be further prepared as an evacuation, care and shelter site by modifying the building\u2019s kitchen and dining area, installing permanent generators, storing care supplies and renovating areas for large animals and livestock.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The money was included as part of an additional $365.5 million for this year&#039;s budget, bringing the county&#039;s total budget for 2023-24 to about $4.4 billion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supervisor David Canepa said the Cow Palace had housed numerous animals during the CZU wildfires in 2020, when it was activated as an emergency shelter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Cow Palace has proven invaluable during emergencies, most notably during the CZU wildfire, when it became Noah\u2019s Ark for county residents struggling to find shelter for horses, cows, goats and even llamas,\u201d Canepa said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The renovations will include a redesign of the kitchen, freezer and dining room to accommodate a larger number of meals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Care supplies, such as cots, blankets, and comfort kits, will be purchased and stocked in preparation for an emergency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWith this $1 million, the Cow Palace will now be equipped to serve thousands of meals a day and keep the lights on with new emergency generators during power outages,\u201d Canepa said. \u201cThis is another investment in emergency preparedness that highlights the county\u2019s continued commitment to public safety.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adjustments to the fiscal year 2023-24 budget included adding a net total of 37 employees to the county staff across various departments, some of whom were already working for the county as temporary workers.
