{"id":26893,"date":"2024-12-09T09:36:09","date_gmt":"2024-12-09T16:36:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peninsula360press.com\/?p=26893"},"modified":"2024-12-12T13:54:38","modified_gmt":"2024-12-12T20:54:38","slug":"trump-policies-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/peninsula360press.com\/en\/trump-policies-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Santa Clara County seeks to challenge Trump policies against vulnerable communities with bill"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_2235\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2235\" style=\"width: 1280px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2235 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/peninsula360press.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Donald_Trump_27150683144.jpg\" alt=\"Santa Clara County seeks to challenge Trump policies against vulnerable communities with bill\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peninsula360press.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Donald_Trump_27150683144.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/peninsula360press.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Donald_Trump_27150683144-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/peninsula360press.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Donald_Trump_27150683144-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/peninsula360press.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Donald_Trump_27150683144-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/peninsula360press.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Donald_Trump_27150683144-16x12.jpg 16w, https:\/\/peninsula360press.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Donald_Trump_27150683144-450x300.jpg 450w, https:\/\/peninsula360press.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Donald_Trump_27150683144-780x520.jpg 780w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2235\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Santa Clara County officials strongly support a new state bill that aims to protect against Trump&#039;s policies.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Listen to this note:<\/p>\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-26893-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/peninsula360press.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Viviana-6053224.mp3?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/peninsula360press.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Viviana-6053224.mp3\">https:\/\/peninsula360press.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Viviana-6053224.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Officials of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.santaclaracounty.gov\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Santa Clara County<\/a> strongly support a new state bill introduced last week that aims to bolster funding available to local jurisdictions to legally shield residents from policies instituted by the incoming Trump administration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Senate Bill X1-1, authored by Senate Budget Committee Chairman Scott Wiener, would provide $10 million in grants to county and city attorneys across the state to support the filing of civil actions against the federal government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the things that are sought to be protected are reproductive health, environmental justice, LGBTQ+ civil rights, and the rights of immigrants and other vulnerable communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Santa Clara County General Counsel Tony LoPresti said the grants, if approved, would scale and align with internal county actions, such as the $5 million in additional immigrant advocacy funding approved by the Board of Supervisors last week.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The county is also conducting an intensive review of other measures that can be taken before the new president is inaugurated on January 20.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat is happening at the state legislative level encourages us to prepare for the multitude of threats that are being fostered within the incoming administration,\u201d LoPresti said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLocal governments play a vital role in advocating for their residents, and that includes challenging policies through legal action; Senator Wiener\u2019s proposal is a welcome aid in achieving those ends,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to $10 million for local law firms, the bill would provide $25 million in grants to legal aid organizations that defend residents from issues such as deportation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">California Governor Gavin Newsom also proposed allocating $25 million to state agencies and the California Department of Justice as a defense fund against Trump&#039;s policies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notably, during Trump&#039;s first term, Santa Clara County fought against several Trump measures. Together with San Francisco, they challenged Trump&#039;s executive order to withhold funding from cities and counties that do not help him deport immigrants, and obtained the first injunction nationwide.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Santa Clara County and San Francisco also filed the first lawsuits to challenge Trump\u2019s public charge rule, winning an injunction blocking the administration from requiring a wealth test for immigrants entering the country or seeking to adjust their immigration status.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Santa Clara County also joined Chicago, Los Angeles and New York City in supporting a lawsuit challenging a travel restriction targeting Muslim-majority nations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Outside of the courts, during Trump\u2019s first term, the county funded immigration legal services and programs to educate the community about their rights, launched the \u201cOne County, One Future\u201d campaign, and implemented the Rapid Response Network, a community-based advocacy project developed to protect immigrant families from threats of deportation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">County Executive James R. Williams applauded the state\u2019s efforts to secure funding and reaffirmed the county\u2019s commitment to resist unjust federal actions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are prepared to protect our community and we know this fight will require considerable resources,\u201d Williams said. \u201cIt is encouraging to know that we have representatives at the state level who are equally committed to standing up to the attacks on our values that we know are coming.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The state Senate is expected to consider Bill X1-1 in January 2025.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The funding would support the litigation activities of local civil prosecutors, including members of the Civil Prosecutors Coalition, which is comprised of many of California&#039;s largest city and county attorneys&#039; offices, representing more than 40 percent of California&#039;s population and millions of residents across those jurisdictions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>You may be interested in:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/peninsula360press.com\/en\/redwood-city-commitment-to-immigrants\/\">Redwood City Mayor Reinforces City&#039;s Commitment to Immigrants<\/a><\/em><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Escucha esta nota: &nbsp; Los funcionarios del condado de Santa Clara apoyan firmemente un nuevo proyecto de ley estatal presentado la semana pasada que tiene como objetivo reforzar los fondos disponibles para las jurisdicciones locales, con la finalidad de proteger legalmente a los residentes de las pol\u00edticas instituidas por la administraci\u00f3n entrante de Trump.
