{"id":28042,"date":"2025-01-28T09:18:48","date_gmt":"2025-01-28T16:18:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peninsula360press.com\/?p=28042"},"modified":"2025-01-28T09:18:48","modified_gmt":"2025-01-28T16:18:48","slug":"immigration-raids-on-places-of-worship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/peninsula360press.com\/en\/immigration-raids-on-places-of-worship\/","title":{"rendered":"Religious congregations sue Trump administration, calling for halt to immigration raids at or near places of worship"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_28043\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28043\" style=\"width: 1280px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-28043 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/peninsula360press.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/iglesia-1.png\" alt=\"Religious congregations sue Trump administration and ask to stop immigration raids in places of worship\" width=\"1280\" height=\"857\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peninsula360press.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/iglesia-1.png 1280w, https:\/\/peninsula360press.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/iglesia-1-300x201.png 300w, https:\/\/peninsula360press.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/iglesia-1-1024x686.png 1024w, https:\/\/peninsula360press.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/iglesia-1-768x514.png 768w, https:\/\/peninsula360press.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/iglesia-1-18x12.png 18w, https:\/\/peninsula360press.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/iglesia-1-150x100.png 150w, https:\/\/peninsula360press.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/iglesia-1-696x466.png 696w, https:\/\/peninsula360press.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/iglesia-1-1068x715.png 1068w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-28043\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A coalition of Quaker meetings has filed a lawsuit in Maryland to block DHS&#039;s abrupt policy change allowing immigration raids at places of worship.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-28042-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/peninsula360press.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/congregaciones-religiosas.mp3?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/peninsula360press.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/congregaciones-religiosas.mp3\">https:\/\/peninsula360press.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/congregaciones-religiosas.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Monday, a coalition of Quaker religious groups filed a lawsuit in Maryland federal court to block the U.S. Department of Homeland Security&#039;s (DHS) abrupt policy change that allows federal immigration officials to enter places of worship to carry out immigration enforcement actions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The policy is already sowing fear among pro-immigrant congregations and has led to the cancellation of religious services out of fear, the lawsuit claims, while alleging that Trump&#039;s policy violates the First Amendment and other protections.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The plaintiffs, represented in the legal challenge by <a href=\"https:\/\/democracyforward.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Democracy Forward<\/a>, include the Philadelphia Congregation of the Religious Society of Friends, the New England Congregation of the Religious Society of Friends, the Baltimore Congregation of the Religious Society of Friends, the Adelphi Congregation of Friends of the Religious Society of Friends, and the Richmond Congregation of Friends of the Religious Society of Friends.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Democracy Forward notes that for decades the United States has protected sensitive sites, including houses of worship, from immigration enforcement activities out of concern that such activities prevent people from receiving essential services and participating in essential activities, such as worship.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite these long-standing protections, he says, the Trump administration\u2019s DHS has changed course and immigration enforcement operations can now take place in protected areas such as churches and religious ceremonies like weddings and funerals, limited only by DHS\u2019s instruction to use \u201ccommon sense.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The suit alleges that the presence of armed government agents in or near houses of worship disrupts the plaintiffs&#039; ability to freely associate and worship. The suit also alleges that the abrupt change in policy violates federal law&#039;s prohibition against federal government agencies acting in an arbitrary and capricious manner.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOne week ago today, President Trump swore an oath to uphold the Constitution, and yet today, religious institutions that have existed in our country since the 17th century are having to go to court to challenge what amounts to a violation of the constitutional right of every person to practice their religion and associate freely,\u201d said Skye Perryman, president and CEO of Democracy Forward.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur team is honored to represent Quaker meetings that have been at the forefront of protecting the values of religious freedom for centuries and will urge the court to act swiftly to stop this unlawful and harmful policy,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The plaintiff congregations said they have protected space for Quakers and other religious minorities to practice their religion. \u201cOur faith requires us to do justice, oppose war and violence, love our neighbors (without exceptions) and make decisions with everyone present.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In that regard, they said that the DHS policy prevents all of those things and invades sacred space and their ability to worship freely. \u201cWe are committed to continuing what we began more than 300 years ago: ensuring that people can practice their religion.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>You may be interested in:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/peninsula360press.com\/en\/minimum-rates-of-arrests-and-deportations\/\">Trump administration sets \u201cminimum quotas\u201d for arrests and deportations for ICE agents<\/a><\/em><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Este lunes, una coalici\u00f3n de reuniones cu\u00e1queras (doctrina religiosa) present\u00f3 una demanda en el tribunal federal de Maryland para bloquear el abrupto cambio de pol\u00edtica del Departamento de Seguridad Nacional de EE.
