To them, it was "just a dog." But for those of us fortunate enough to have been chosen by one, we know it is never "just a dog." A dog is a quiet companion, a witness to our lives, someone who waits for us without conditions and loves us even on our worst days.

Four months ago, I had to say goodbye to Zapote.

Toward the end of the pandemic, my son, his wife, my grandson, and their dog moved into the house behind mine. I already had two dogs, Mina and Benito. From the very first days, Zapote began visiting my home. He would arrive in the morning and wouldn't return to his own house until they called him home at night.

Then one day, he simply decided never to leave again.

At first, I thought it was because he enjoyed the company of my dogs. Perhaps he liked the garden, where he could spend hours watching the street. Maybe he loved the sofa I allowed him to climb onto, or the peaceful atmosphere of my home.

In time, I realized the reason was something else. Zapote had chosen me.

He was always wherever I was. If I was working, he lay at my feet. If I was watching television, he settled beside the couch. At night, he slept on the floor next to my bed. He never asked for much. A gentle pat, a kind word, or simply being close was enough.

Without either of us planning it, Zapote became my dog.

When he came to live with me, he was about eight years old. My son had adopted him when he was only two. He was an extraordinarily well-mannered, clean, friendly, and gentle dog. I always said he reminded me of the dogfrom Lady and the Tramp, with that perfect blend of elegance and sweetness that won everyone over.

He never stopped being my son's dog, too.

Whenever he saw him, he did everything he could to get his attention. His tail wagged with excitement, and he happily went for walks with him. That bond never disappeared.

In 2022, my granddaughter was born. My son and his wife were busy raising a six-year-old boy and a newborn baby. Little by little, almost without anyone noticing, Zapote ended up living with me full-time.

Then came the responsibilities that always accompany love: veterinary visits, baths, grooming, food, and medications whenever they were needed. His bed was now in my bedroom, and his food bowl stood beside those of Mina and Benito, who looked tiny next to him.

Without meaning to, Zapote quietly took over my heart.

Last year, he began having some health problems. In November, I noticed a strange odor coming from his mouth. I took him to the veterinarian, and we received the news no one ever wants to hear: oral cancer.

We did everything we possibly could.

There were consultations, tests, treatments, and even surgery. Zapote endured it all with remarkable courage. He never lost his appetite, never stopped enjoying his walks, and never stopped showing affection. He continued seeking my touch, spending time with my granddaughter, and greeting Sofía—who has lived with me for nearly twenty years and is, to me, the sister life gave me—with the same joy as always.

At the beginning of this year, the cancer returned more aggressively. Even then, Zapote kept fighting.

There was only one thing that broke my heart. While he slept, he would softly whimper. He shifted constantly, searching for a position that wouldn't hurt, despite the increasingly powerful medications he needed. His black coat—the one that had inspired his name—began to fill with gray. And his eyes... those gentle, soulful eyes that had always radiated peace, began to reflect exhaustion.

The veterinarian was very clear. There was nothing more that could be done.

My son and I had to make one of the hardest decisions of our lives.

We didn't want Zapote to continue suffering, but we also didn't want his final moments to be spent in the cold room of a veterinary hospital. We decided to say goodbye to him at home, surrounded by those who loved him.

The night before, something happened that I will never forget. While I was asleep, I felt someone watching me. I opened my eyes, and there was Zapote, standing beside my bed, his head resting on the mattress, looking directly into my eyes.

He didn't make a sound. He simply looked at me.

I sat down on the floor beside him and stroked him for a long time, until he drifted back to sleep.

To this day, I believe that was our farewell.

I will never forget that look.

The next morning, on March 3, my son took him to the beach, his favorite place. They walked together along the shoreline for a while, just as they had done so many times before. Then they came home.

My son could barely hold back his tears. Zapote had come into his life even before his first child.

I don't know whether dogs understand when the end is near. I like to believe they do.

When the veterinarian arrived, Zapote quietly walked over to his bed—the same one where he had spent so many peaceful hours sleeping in the living room. He lay down with a serenity that still amazes me.

We all sat around him.

My other two dogs had gone out for their regular walk with the young man who took them to the park every third day. Perhaps it was better that way.

The veterinarian administered the injection. Zapote closed his eyes almost immediately.

And then he was gone.

Without fear.

Without pain.

At peace.

We buried him in my garden, beneath a fountain. Diego, my beloved dog of many years, and Mitzy, my cat, were already resting there.

I like to think they are together now.

Four months have passed since then. I miss him every single day.

There are still moments when, without realizing it, I expect to see him appear behind me. Sometimes I think I hear his footsteps. Other times, I find myself looking at the place where his bed used to be.

I don't know whether this grief feels deeper because I, too, have grown older and learned that time with those we love is always far too short. Or perhaps it is simply because Zapote possessed that rare gift some dogs have: the ability to enter a person's heart and remain there forever.

Today I know that letting him go was an act of love.

True love is not holding on to someone who is suffering simply because we cannot bear our own sadness. Sometimes, true love means accepting the pain of saying goodbye in order to give peace to the one who gave us so many years of unconditional love.

Anyone who has ever loved a dog will understand every word of this story.

And those who have not yet had that blessing may discover, in reading it, why when a dog leaves us, we do not lose just a pet. We lose a member of the family.

We lose a gaze that never judged us. We lose a quiet presence that made the world a gentler place.

But above all, we lose a piece of our heart... the piece that, one day, without asking permission, a dog quietly claimed as its own.

More from the author: Reafirmar quien eres a los 71 años: cuando la vida sigue llamándote hacia adelante

Hay personas que nunca han tenido una mascota y, por más que uno trate de explicarlo, simplemente no pueden comprender el dolor que deja su ausencia.
