It publicly affirms the value of those who work every day to preserve our roots, bring families together, and build a community where everyone feels they belong.

In recognizing the period from September 15 through October 15, the county celebrated the history, cultures, and contributions of Latino communities. It also emphasized an essential truth: our community is diverse. It includes Indigenous, Afro-Latino, and immigrant experiences, alongside those of families who have lived in this country for generations. Recognizing that diversity allows us to celebrate our heritage with greater depth and respect.

Casa Círculo Cultural has made culture a meeting place for generations. Through art, dance, education, and community participation, it creates spaces where children can discover their abilities, adults can share their knowledge, and families can strengthen their sense of belonging. Behind every performance and every class are teachers, artists, volunteers, and parents whose efforts sustain this work.

In accepting the proclamation, founder Verónica Escámez represented those very people. The recognition also belongs to those who prepare materials, support students, teach choreography, or give their time so others can find opportunities. Their work demonstrates that culture is part of a community’s education, well-being, and daily life.

The Latino Community Council of Redwood City, in turn, has helped keep traditions alive through celebrations such as Fiestas Patrias. Arnoldo Arreola, the organization’s chair, thanked the officials, partners, and volunteers who make these gatherings possible. When downtown Redwood City fills with families, music, and dance, public space also becomes a place of shared memory, connection, and cultural pride.

These celebrations allow younger generations to connect with their families’ stories. A child who watches a traditional dance, hears their language, or recognizes a grandparent’s custom receives a message that can stay with them for a lifetime: their story has value and deserves to be shared.

The presentation of an artwork by Fernando Escartiz, inspired by Mexico’s Angel of Independence, added symbolic meaning to the gathering. The laurel wreath and broken chain evoke honor, victory, and freedom. At a ceremony dedicated to cultural heritage, these symbols invite reflection on the dignity of families who have built their lives here and their right to express their language, traditions, and origins with pride.

Public recognition is valuable. Its lasting impact, however, will depend on continued, concrete opportunities. During the meeting, interest was expressed in expanding Casa Círculo Cultural’s programming into District 2 and bringing proposals for support before the Board. That possibility deserves follow-through: making cultural and educational programs available to more families requires resources, space, and sustained collaboration.

We thank the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors for recognizing Casa Círculo Cultural and LCCRC. Honoring these organizations also honors the people who build community through their work and generosity. May this proclamation inspire a lasting commitment so that more children, young people, and adults can learn, create, and participate—carrying their roots with pride and finding opportunities to build their future.

You may be interested in: Escultor Escartiz trae Ángel de la Independencia a San Francisco para celebrar fiestas patrias mexicanas

[9,14

post-34856","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-community","category-cover
["GET
