The Board is required by law to adopt a final map by December 15, 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Work to redraw supervisorial district boundaries takes place every 10 years, after the U.S. Census Bureau releases updated census information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Board of Supervisors, based on recommendations from local chapters of the League of Women Voters, appointed 15 volunteer commission members to participate in a months-long public process to gather public input.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So Thursday\u2019s selection of two San Mateo draft maps to send to the Board of Supervisors came during the commission\u2019s 10th meeting, with more than 200 comments submitted from the public \u2014 in person, online, through social media or by mail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat we\u2019ve witnessed here in San Mateo County is the antidote to the idea that people aren\u2019t interested in participating in local affairs,\u201d said Commission Chairman Jim Lawrence of Foster City. \u201cQuite the opposite. We\u2019ve seen tremendous participation in this fundamental part of democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While all five districts must have substantially balanced populations, key requirements under state and federal law also include compliance with federal and state equal voting rights; drawing districts that are, to the extent possible, geographically contiguous; and keeping communities of interest intact as much as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, keep cities intact, and have easily identifiable boundaries \u2013 major roads, railways, streets, rivers, mountains \u2013 as much as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the 2020 census, each district should have around 153,083 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Draft maps for consideration<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Following a five-hour public hearing, the advisory commission voted to send two draft maps to the Board of Supervisors for consideration.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first is <a href=\"https:\/\/smcdistrictlines.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Unity-Map.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Unity Map<\/a>, presented by a coalition led by Thrive, an alliance of local nonprofit agencies; while the second, called <a href=\"https:\/\/smcdistrictlines.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Comm-Espinoza.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Commissioner Espinoza's Map<\/a>The meeting was presented by Advisory Commissioner Rudy Espinoza of Redwood City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>You may be interested in:<a href=\"https:\/\/peninsula360press.com\/en\/san-mateo-county-takes-major-step-to-tackle-homelessness\/\"> San Mateo County takes major step to address homelessness<\/a><\/em><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Una comisi\u00f3n asesora encargada de estudiar los cambios en los l\u00edmites de los cinco distritos supervisores del condado de San Mateo vot\u00f3 el jueves para enviar dos propuestas de mapas a la Junta de Supervisores.
