Authorities are investigating a shooting in East Palo Alto on Tuesday afternoon that left one person dead and at least two injured.
On Tuesday, May 17 at 6:02 p.m., officers from the East Palo Alto Police Department responded to a shooter activation at Jack Farrell Park located in the 2500 block of Fordham Street.
Responding officers located a shooting victim in the park.
Police said the victim succumbed to his injuries in an ambulance on the way to the hospital. Meanwhile, the San Mateo County coroner's office said the deceased man was 34-year-old East Palo Alto resident Ralph Fields Jr.
Two additional victims of the shooting were transported to the Menlo Park Fire Protection District fire station and then transported to the hospital.
A fourth victim of the shooting was identified but did not seek treatment, police said.
Investigators said it appeared that the shooting was a targeted attack and not a random act.
According to Palo Alto Online, nearby residents said they heard at least three to five different guns firing multiple rounds.
Resident Francisco Carlos told the local media that he was in bed when he heard what he thought were firecrackers.
"Then there was a different sound, and I thought it was gunshots," only to run outside and see a man lying on the grass near the park with a chest wound. "These things happen so fast."
The resident detailed that he did not see the shooter or shooters, as everyone passing nearby fled the scene on foot or by car, as the park is a popular place, where people gather daily.
For her part, Gina Sudaria, superintendent of the Ravenswood City School District, reported that at the time of the shooting families and children were practicing softball and playing in playground games, so they were caught in the crossfire, and are now "traumatized."
In response, he assured that Ravenswood central office staff, mental health supports, school counselors and psychologists were deployed to each site early Wednesday morning, prioritizing resources where there is the greatest need.
He also emphasized that the School District will remain committed to providing the necessary support and services during this difficult time.
Police continue to investigate the shooting with the assistance of the Menlo Park Police Department, the San Mateo County District Attorney's Office and the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office.
The authorities have asked for the community's support in finding those responsible, and asked anyone with information about the shooting to call acting Commander. Angel Sanchez at 650-853-3154.
