During December 2023, the California Coastal Commission approved the relocation plan for Station 59, in Pescadero, and with it the San Mateo County The contract, design and community collaboration process has begun.

On June 26, a workshop was organized with the Pescadero community to hear what they wanted from this station in terms of aesthetics, logistics, space for first aid and the extension of the city's water line.

With a budget of $20 million, the new location for the station will be in front of the Pescadero High School gymnasium parking lot in Butano Cutoff. It will be built on an area of 1.75 acres and will have space for 14 firefighters, double what the previous station could accommodate.

The county hired PBK Architects, who will be responsible for designing the new station, and they have presented ideas about what it could look like when the project is completed. Likewise, they have the objective of implementing native plants and trees that retain water and capture the natural beauty of the town.

Additionally, the new fire station will have a room dedicated to patient care, which, although it will not be a replacement for the emergency room, will be able to assist with paramedic care.

The reason many residents supported this project is the extension of the water line to the high school. For decades, San Mateo County has promised to fix this problem because the water used in toilets and sinks is not potable, in other words, it is contaminated with nitrate, which makes it undrinkable.

The current water line ends at Stage Road, but with this station it will be extended to the high school.

It should be noted that there will be a second public workshop in August, however, the details have not been published yet.

Construction of the water line is expected to begin in spring 2025 with construction of the new fire station beginning in spring 2026. The entire project is projected to be completed by the end of 2027.
