Redwood City, has been chosen along with other cities and counties in California, as a "Prohousing" community ?Provivienda? making it eligible for funding incentives and additional resources through state grant programs that accelerate housing production.
Added to the list of "Prohousing" communities are the cities of Emeryville, Fresno, Needles, Rancho Cordova, Riverside, Salinas, Stockton and Ukiah, as well as the counties of San Diego and Yuba, with which, to date, there are a total than 22 California communities are now designated as Provivienda.
The announcement was made by the Governor. Gavin Newsom, this Wednesday, who announced that these 11 more communities have earned the distinction of being named "Prohousing" for their commitment to build more homes, faster.
He also specified that the designation will help unlock additional funds that will allow communities to increase their efforts to meet critical housing needs.
“Amazingly, in just a few weeks since our last announcement, the number of ?Provivienda? has doubled, a testament to the growing number of communities taking responsibility and committing to building their fair share of homes. Rather than make excuses, these jurisdictions are rising to the challenge, making tough decisions and ensuring Californians have access to the housing they need,” Newsom said.
For the state administration, it is vital that local governments build their share of housing and implement policies that increase production, as it seeks to reach the collective goal of 2.5 million new homes in the next eight years, with at least one million to go. meet the needs of the lowest-income Californians.
It should be noted that cities and counties that obtain the Pro-Housing Designation receive incentives such as additional points or other preferences in the score of competitive financing programs administered by the Agency for Housing and Community Development ?HCD, for its acronym in English? of California, which gives them an advantage over other jurisdictions.
They are also eligible for the Prohousing Incentive Pilot Program ?PIP? which rewards Prohousing communities at the forefront of addressing California's housing crisis with additional funds to accelerate the production of affordable housing.
“These 11 jurisdictions join 11 others in committing to creating the right mix of housing close to jobs, public transportation, health care and key amenities to build strong and prosperous communities,” said Lourdes Castro Ramírez, secretary of the Business Agency, Consumer Services and Housing.
To earn the Provivienda Designation, cities and counties must demonstrate that they are promoting climate-smart housing development by enacting Provivienda policies, including, but not limited to, simplifying multi-family housing developments, zoning in close proximity to jobs and transit to reduce emissions; and creating more affordable housing in places that historically or currently exclude households of color and those with lower incomes.
“By taking advantage of the tools, technical assistance, funding opportunities and incentives available through HCD, Prohousing communities can scale up their efforts to make a real difference in working to address a housing crisis that has been decades in the making. », assured the director of HCD, Gustavo Velásquez.
The 11 communities announced yesterday join the cities of Los Angeles, El Cerrito, Citrus Heights, Fontana, Oakland, Roseville, San Diego, West Sacramento and Sacramento, and the counties of Sacramento and Placer.
