Forest connectivity Why are trees making phone calls?

forest connectivity

*Erratum: this note was originally published on April 30, 2022, and edited with precise data on the technology used by Rainforest Connection on May 14 of the same year.

One visit to the forests of Borneo was enough for software engineer Topher White of San Francisco to decide that he needed to attach cell phones to trees in forests and jungles to stop illegal deforestation.

This is how Rainforest Connection an organization founded in 2014 to prevent illegal deforestation, stop animal poaching and perform bioacoustic monitoring of forests and jungles.

This organization, which started using disused cellular phones, now has state-of-the-art technology, using a more sophisticated system capable of covering 3 km per device called "Guardian System".

What is the "Guardian System" that achieves forest connectivity?

According to data from the organization "Guardian System, transmits soundscape data to the cloud" where the platform that works for free, with the Automated Biodiversity Monitoring Network analysis program -ArbimonRed- uses artificial intelligence to detect threats that would be putting forests and jungles at risk of logging and to monitor biodiversity.

All this in order to protect and better understand the forests and their species.

The organization founded by Topher White currently has a large group of scientists and engineers who are dedicated to the placement and monitoring of forests and rainforests for their protection.

According to the same data provided by Rainforest Connection, deforestation, which accounts for 17% of all global carbon emissions, causes the largest species extinction crisis since the time of the dinosaurs, causes droughts affecting more than 20 million people in South America, and destroys indigenous forests comprising 20% of the Brazilian Amazon rainforest.

It is worth mentioning that Rainforest Connection keeps its doors open to anyone who would like to join in the work of forest connectivity.
