Donovan Carrillo, the Mexican who has put AL on the world map

Donovan Carrillo made his debut at the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games, where after presenting his short program routine he achieved a score of 79.69, enough to qualify for the long program and the possibility of getting into the medal standings.

Dressed in a costume reminiscent of Juan Gabriel's, in his first presentation at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City, 22-year-old Donovan Carrillo from Zapopan, Jalisco, Mexico, is already trending on social networks and making headlines around the world, as he is the first Latin American to reach a figure skating final.

To the rhythm of the songs "Black Magic Woman" and "Shake It" by guitarist Carlos Santana, Donovan Carrillo performed a routine with Quad Toeloop, Triple Axel and Triple Lutz+Triple Toeloop, and with a smile that never left him.

The battle in the ice arena earned Carrillo a 19th place finish to advance to the free program to be held on Wednesday at 5:15 p.m. (Pacific time).

The great favorites to win gold in figure skating are the American Nathan Chen, who in the short program scored 113.97 points, followed by Japan's Yuma Kagiyama and Shoma Uno with 108.12 and 105.90 points, respectively.

What is certain is that Donovan Carrillo is already one of the 24 best figure skaters in the world, an achievement that, at least for four more years, no one will be able to take away from him.

Donovan marks the return of a Mexican to figure skating: he is the first Mexican in 30 years to attend this world competition, which is held every four years.

The other three Mexican competitors who have shown their qualities in a skating rink at the Olympic Games are: Diana Evans (Calgary 1988), Ricardo Olavarrieta (Calgary 1988 and Albertville 1992) and Mayda Navarro (Albertville 1992).
