A woman died after being struck by a vehicle in a fatal collision in San Jose this Monday morning.
San Jose police responded to Tully Road and Lanai Avenue at 4:32 a.m. after receiving reports that a pedestrian was injured in a collision. The victim was taken to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries, police said.
The driver remained on the scene and was cooperating with the investigation. Roads in the area were closed while the scene was investigated and drivers were urged to use alternate routes.
This crash marks San Jose's 13th traffic fatality and 10th pedestrian fatality this year.
According to the SWITRS Integrated State Traffic Records System, each year more than 3,000 of these crashes result in death in California, making it one of the three states with the highest number of deaths from traffic accidents in the nation.
It is believed that the majority of traffic deaths could be prevented if driver errors such as poor decision making, lack of concentration, inadequate or no use of safety equipment, and tired driving were not a factor. .
There are nearly 200,000 auto accidents resulting in injuries in California each year. If you add all the minor accidents in which no injuries occur, the estimated number of total incidents, both reported and unreported, would rise to more than half a million.
California is in the top five states nationally for fatal crashes, along with Texas and Florida. About 3,000 traffic deaths occur in each of those states each year.
