First for lending itself to a setup by former President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump for his political campaign, and now for an outbreak of E. coli bacteria in its Quarter Pounder hamburgers in some states, the famous "happy meal" chain, McDonald's, has found itself embroiled in strong controversies.
On Sunday, Trump wore an apron and operated a deep fryer as he delivered orders at the drive-thru window of a McDonald's in Feasterville-Trevose, Pennsylvania, where, like the hamburgers sold by the golden arches chain, everything was pre-made, earning him criticism.
The burger chain found itself in hot water again yesterday when the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported an outbreak of E. coli bacteria in Quarter Pounder burgers, and investigators are working quickly to confirm which food ingredient was contaminated.
McDonald's has recalled the ingredients in these burgers and they will not be available for sale in some states. Most of the illnesses have been reported in Colorado and Nebraska.
So far, 10 states have been affected. There are 49 confirmed cases, 10 hospitalizations and one death.
McDonald's has also stopped using fresh sliced onions and quarter-pound beef patties in several states while an investigation continues to identify the ingredient causing the illness.
Health officials are urging you to consult your health care provider if you ate a McDonald's Quarter Pounder and have severe E. coli symptoms such as:
- Diarrhea and fever higher than 102°F.
- Diarrhea that lasts more than 3 days and does not improve.
- Bloody diarrhea.
- Vomiting so intense that you can't keep liquids down.
- Signs of dehydration such as: not urinating much, dry mouth and throat, and/or feeling dizzy when standing up.
It should be noted that, according to the CDC, investigators are working to confirm what ingredient in Quarter Pounder burgers is making people sick and whether it reached other restaurants or stores.
