Newsom nominates Latina to be California Supreme Court justice

In a state that doesn't have many Latinas sitting on the bench or arguing cases before it, Patricia Guerrero will make history as chief justice of California.

Gov. Gavin Newsom on Wednesday nominated Guerrero, 50, to be chief justice of the California Supreme Court. Guerrero, who was already the high court's first Latina after being sworn in in March, will also be the court's first Latina chief justice.

Guerrero, a former attorney in private practice, also served as a federal prosecutor before becoming a judge in San Diego County Superior Court, and in 2017, she became an appellate judge in California’s Fourth District Court of Appeal. She grew up in the Imperial Valley to immigrant parents from Mexico who graduated from Stanford Law School.
