During the month of August, the Redwood City Police Department confiscated three firearms from juveniles in three separate incidents. While there does not appear to be any connection between the incidents at this time, in total, six juveniles and three adults have been arrested or charged with illegal firearm possession.
Local authorities said August was a "busy month" in this regard, which has raised alarm bells.
Six firearms were seized for illegal possession or for being used in a crime. This includes firearms seized from minors.
Most of the seized firearms were stolen or unregistered, so-called “ghost guns” – a weapon that lacks a serial number and is typically assembled by the user.
"The Redwood City Police Department wants to make this city as safe as possible for residents, business owners and visitors," the department said in a statement.
In light of this, he called on people to keep all firearms secured in a safe inside their homes, which would help prevent them from falling into the hands of unauthorized users. He also asked people to never leave firearms in their vehicles.
"If you see something, say something. Educate your children and notify a responsible adult if you see an unsecured firearm," he said.
The Redwood City Police Department is asking that anyone with any information regarding illegally possessed firearms or firearms used in crimes to contact them for tips on any Redwood City case, so those interested can call the tip line at 650-780-7110.
