Juan Soldado, the Saint of Migrants

Juan Soldado sounds alongside Santa Muerte or Malverde as a "saint" to whom the needy pray. He is the patron saint of the desperate who want to cross to the other side but cannot: the Saint of the Migrants..

Thousands of men and women have died in the strangest ways for refusing to renounce their faith - whatever their worship - and the manner of their death has determined their subsequent worship or malediction.

St. Ignatius of Antioch, who became a bishop and held the curia for 40 years, was thrown to the lions who devoured him alive. St. Blaise was flayed with an iron comb and then beheaded. St. Dorothea, on her way to the scaffold, told those attending her execution that, where she was going, there was neither cold nor winter. A mocking young man told her, then, after she was dead and as proof, to send him a basket of flowers to prove the eternal spring in which she would live. The following year, he received the basket and that impressed young man also converted to Christianity and died as a martyr, his name was Saint Theophilus.

Juan Castillo Morales shares this unjust way of dying - or so it has been said - to save his name from the oblivion in which his detractors have wanted to put him. He sounds, along with Santa Muerte or Malverde, like a saint to whom the needy pray. Juan Soldado is the patron saint of the desperate who want to cross to the other side but cannot. He is the Saint of the Migrants.

In the voice of chronicler Juan Garibay, Juan Castillo Morales was a soldier from Oaxaca who on February 13, 1938 was at the headquarters of the barracks on Callejón Z between 2nd and 3rd, almost on the corner of F in Tijuana, Baja California.

There was a little girl who lived on Second Street, Olga Camacho Martínez, who used to pass by there on her way to the store and would come to the command to run errands for which the soldiers paid her "piloncito". One day, when Juan had a fight with his wife, the girl passed by the place and Juan was drunk and presumably a mariguano, he wanted to take the girl by force and killed her.

After committing the murder, he took her body out of the window and carried her to a shop opposite the garrison where he dismembered her and put her in a toolbox. Her uniform was covered in blood. He went home and told his wife -when she saw him arrive full of blood-: "because of you, look what I did", because of the effect of the drunkenness he was carrying, he fell asleep.

It was at that moment that the wife took the bloodstained clothes to the commander's office. The police went after the soldier even though the girl had not been reported missing. A group of neighbors began the search until they found, by the blood marks on the walls, the soldier's house where they found the toolbox with the remains of the girl. The mother lost her sanity. The murderer accepted his guilt and regretted his crime, because he also loved the girl. The villagers wanted the soldier to be executed and although the army, at the time, defended him from being lynched, the case reached the president who asked the U.S. government to intervene and investigate the case.

An FBI agent, Ed Dieckmann, chief of typing for San Diego County, was commissioned and after a brief investigation, he would say that it had been one of the easiest cases he had ever had to solve because he had a confessed murderer, samples of the soldier's skin under the murdered girl's fingernails and also the rapist's semen in the little girl's womb.

The army sentenced him to the escape law. They took the soldier to the cemetery in the city of Tijuana and shot him there. Later, the place where the soldier fell was identified with a stone by one of the people who attended the shooting. Over time, more stones were placed in the place and, when they saw that there was a considerable mound, someone came up with the idea of grabbing an abandoned grave next to the entrance of the cemetery, it was said that the soldier had fallen there and it became a place of worship where the parishioners went and asked for miracles related to being able to pass to the other side.

If that were the only version of the legend about Juan Soldado, it is very likely that he would have gone down in history as a vile murderer; however, along with the facts already narrated, we must take into account that, at that time, Lázaro Cárdenas served as president of Mexico, who began a crusade against casinos that, at least in Tijuana, had more implications than elsewhere; a business that represented one of the main destinations for tourists and foreign visitors. The murdered girl was the daughter of one of the union leaders who had his hands in the casino business.

There were also people who claimed that the political motive for the assassination was to intimidate these unscrupulous leaders, and that the captain on duty in the military garrison forced the private to take the blame. The woman who, they said, was Juan Soldado's wife, in reality, only appeared on that occasion bringing the soldier's clothes and subsequently disappeared without a trace.

It was also strange that the scheduled execution was public, as these acts were considered by Mexican authorities to be barbaric and without legal basis. On the other hand, the execution was arranged early in the morning of February 17, 1938, so that the journalists' photos could satisfy the hunger for blood and vengeance that was falling on the soldier who had just turned 24 years old.

Juan Soldado was executed in front of more than a thousand people.

His tomb is the main attraction in Tijuana's number one municipal cemetery. Over time, her tomb has been filled with a variety of offerings: votive offerings, tombstones, candles, photographs of people who want to cross into the United States but can't, and of people involved in human trafficking. Little Olga's tomb, which was moved to another cemetery - Tijuana's number two - has been forgotten and is now known as the tomb of the forgotten girl.

Prayer to Juan Soldado

Juan Soldado

Praised be the Most Holy name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit; three divine persons and one true God. I do not doubt for an instant that, through your infallible intercession before the Almighty, my good desires will be fulfilled if they are convenient for the greater glory of God Our Lord and yours in particular.

As you will well realize, Juanito, my longings are devoid of captious wickedness and all I desire is to find effective support from you to silence the moral and material destitution in which I find myself plunged.

Brother John Soldier, I earnestly beg you not to abandon me with your protection in this difficult trial.

I trust in your merciful omnipotence of God and in your unfailing help promising you, from this moment, to be one more of your countless devotees. Amen.

Remember! Starting April 15, ages 16 and older eligible for COVID-19 vaccine

Pamela Cruz. Peninsula 360 Press [P360P].

While the supply of COVID-19 vaccine remains very limited and San Mateo County continues to focus on inoculating eligible individuals at local community clinics and residents of lower-income and hard-to-reach neighborhoods, beginning April 15, 16-year-old residents will be able to access their doses.

In order for these areas to access their immunization, residents should check with their primary care provider and pharmacies to make appointments.

There are currently 33 pharmacies offering vaccines in San Mateo County, including Rite Aid, Safeway/Albertsons, Costco, CVS and Walgreens, with new sites being added all the time.

"All residents, regardless of their current eligibility, can sign up for the county's notification tool to receive updates on the county's vaccine rollout," the county said in a statement.

In that regard, he explained that to make the vaccine accessible to all, the county's notification tool is available in Spanish, simplified and traditional Chinese, and Tagalog, while, through Google translator, the form is also available in several other languages.

Residents should also sign up for the state's MyTurn tool, which is also used to schedule appointments at community immunization events.

As of this morning, according to data from the Statewide Immunization Registry, California has administered 22,974,654 doses of COVID-19 vaccine, which is about 365,829 doses per day.

In the case of San Mateo County, 355,018 people have been inoculated with at least one of the 565,720 doses administered, while 231,614 people are fully immunized.

Newsom issues budget action to prevent wildfires

fire prevention

Governor Gavin Newsom, Senate President Pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins - San Diego District - and Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon - Lakewood District - announced a $536 million funding plan to help improve California's wildfire resiliency.

"With California facing another extremely dry year, it is critical that we get a head start on reducing our fire risk. We are doing so by investing more than $500 million in projects and programs that provide better fire prevention for all parts of California," said the California governor.

He added that key parts of the Administration's initial proposal have been supplemented with legislative ideas that will pay dividends over the years, such as increased investments in forest health projects, defensible space improvements, fire housing hardening, fire prevention grants and prevention workforce training.

He noted that the plan includes vegetation management of public and private lands, community-focused efforts for prevention and resilience, and economic stimulus for the forest economy.

"Because we know that California's wildfires are not limited to forested lands, we have turned our attention to all types of vulnerable land and vegetation, with prevention incentives that protect more residents," the officials said in a joint statement.

The $536 million funding package consists of $125 million from the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Funds and $411 million from the General Fund.

Similarly, officials plan to obtain federal disaster prevention grants to match the money spent on housing rehabilitation.

"We are pleased to have reached an agreement to quickly put California on the path to strong wildfire prevention, but we know more work is needed," they abounded.

On the other hand, they stressed that without the hard work of Assemblymen Richard Bloom and Phil Ting, and Senators Bob Wieckowski, Susan Rubio and Mike McGuire, among others, the plan could not have come to fruition. "We anticipate additional benefits from the 2021-2022 budget discussions."

New Video Released of Assault on Asian Community in San Francisco

Bay City News [BCN]. Peninsula 360 Press [P360P].

A new video released Wednesday by the San Francisco Public Defender's Office shows a man being brutally beaten by a group of people in the city's Tenderloin neighborhood, moments before the no apparent motive attack on two Asian seniors.

Steven Jenkins, 39, is accused of assaulting Ngoc Pham, 83, and Xiao Zhen Xie, 75, without cause on March 17 near Market and Seventh streets. Jenkins has since been charged with two counts each of assault, battery and elder abuse.

The assaults, which left Pham with facial fractures and Xie with black eyes, have gone viral on social media and caused outrage amid a spike in hate crimes against Asians across the country. Although investigators said they were looking into whether the attack was racially motivated, Jenkins has not been charged with a hate crime.

"We speak of two deeply troubling assaults on Asian-American seniors in our community at a time when Asian-Americans locally and nationally are suffering from escalating violence and anti-Asian racism," Jenkins' attorney, Assistant Public Defender Eric McBurney, said in a statement. "However, this situation is far more complex than it appears. Based on the facts I have reviewed, I do not believe Mr. Jenkins' actions were racially motivated."

The new surveillance video shows several people at UN Plaza attacking Jenkins, hitting him dozens of times in the head over the course of a few minutes, just before Jenkins then attacked Xie and Pham.

"On that day, Mr. Jenkins himself was the victim of an attack for no apparent reason by four unknown assailants who struck him over forty times immediately before he was seen striking Mr. Pham and Ms. Xiao. Due to the initial attack, Mr. Jenkins suffered multiple head injuries, and I believe he was in an impaired mental state±, McBurney said.

"What happened that day was out of character for him. He has no previous convictions for physically hurting anyone. He has struggled all his life on the streets, largely ignored by society. Even when he is attacked and beaten more than 40 times in broad daylight in the busy UN square, not a single person comes to his aid," he said.

The assailants who attacked Jenkins have not been identified, McBurney said.

Jenkins remains in custody and is being held without bond, according to jail records.

Fremont Crash Leaves One Dead, Two Injured

Bay City News [BCN]. Peninsula 360 Press [P360P].

A two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Thornton Avenue and an Interstate 880 exit ramp in Newark early Friday morning killed at least one person and seriously injured two others, according to the Fremont Police Department.

Fremont Police received emergency calls around 2:30 a.m. Friday where a crash was reported. Officers and first responders were dispatched to the intersection and found two vehicles with major damage.

A preliminary investigation determined that one vehicle was traveling westbound on Thornton Avenue and the second vehicle was traveling northbound on the exit ramp.

According to a witness interviewed by police, the vehicle exiting the freeway had a green light, while the vehicle traveling on Thornton struck it.

The two drivers and a passenger in one of the vehicles were transported to a hospital with major injuries. The passenger later died from those injuries, Fremont police said.

The identity of the passenger has not been released, as family members have not yet been notified.

Officers are still investigating the collision and believe alcohol may have been a factor.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact Michael Ramsey of the Fremont Police Department's Traffic Unit at (510) 790-6776 or by email at mramsey@fremont.gov.

A Disease in the NFL: Phillip Adams, the former 49er who killed six people

The former NFL player murdered five people in South Carolina, including a top doctor and two minors, and then took his own life in yet another act that links football with violence.

BY MIGUEL ENRÍQUEZ

A police source who chose not to reveal his name said the doctor Adams killed had treated him before killing him on April 7, but at midnight Thursday, the 33-year-old former player took his own life with a .45 caliber handgun.

The 33-year-old shined as a collegiate player, where he was able to develop the potential that led him to the NFL to be drafted in 2010 by the San Francisco 49ersthen played for the New England Patriots and finished his short career in 2015 in an Atlanta Falcons uniform.

Like hundreds of athletes who are dedicated to the sport of tackling, Phillip Adams was the victim of more than one concussion, so science could try to find an explanation for the apparently motiveless act of murdering six people and then taking his own life.

The characteristic disease that derives from the blows of this style is called Chronic traumatic encephalopathyThe NFL recognized in 2016 that 99% of their league's players suffer from this condition.

Within the symptoms that are present when an athlete is part of this condition are the memory loss, constant headache, poor light support before your eyes, mood disorders, suicidal thoughts and aggressive behaviors.

The former Forty-Niner's case isn't the first to end with this situation. One of the most named was that of Aaron Hernandez, star of the New England Patriots who murdered his friend Odin Lloyd in 2017. The tight end went to prison and ended his life there; days later, an examination of his brain revealed that he was suffering from CTE at a level never before seen in any other athlete.

Brains that are noted to be damaged by the disease have large cavities and torn tissues at their center, indicators of neuronal death. In 2017, the newspaper New York Times published a study conducted on 202 brains to analyze the conditions in which they ended up with similar patterns; of those, 111 were from former NFL players, 110 turned out to be part of the FTE.

After a lengthy examination of various players who end their lives (or keep them) in similar conditions, it is very likely that Phillip Adams' autopsy will show a new victim of the blows that the head suffers inside the gridiron and that takes its toll a few years later.

Newsom applauds Biden's actions to reduce gun violence

Pamela Cruz. Peninsula 360 Press [P360P].

California Governor Gavin Newsom applauded President Joseph Biden's executive actions on gun violence, which he said will save lives and reduce unnecessary loss and suffering across the country.

In a statement issued this morning, the governor said mass shootings and gun violence rarely make the news, but it is a crisis that claims the lives of nearly 40,000 people a year.

"In the wake of three tragic mass shootings and the daily gun violence that devastates families but rarely makes the news, President Biden is taking necessary life-saving federal action to curb the gun violence crisis that grips our country and claims nearly 40,000 lives a year," she said.

"I applaud his orders to curtail the proliferation of untraceable 'ghost guns,' invest in violence interventions, and regulate the trade and trafficking of illegal firearms. These actions will save lives and reduce needless loss and suffering across the country," he said.

In that sense, he recalled that the state of California has one of the strictest gun laws in the country.

"California prides itself on having the strictest gun laws in the nation, including groundbreaking state protections approved by voters in Proposition 63 to ban the possession of high-capacity ammunition magazines and require background checks to keep ammunition out of the hands of dangerous people," he said.

In that regard, he explained that since taking office as governor, he has signed several bills aimed at reducing gun violence, including strengthening gun violence restraining orders and regulating the sale of firearms and ammunition.

"I also worked with the Legislature to accelerate "ghost gun" regulation to end the use of untraceable firearms by criminals. Because of California's commitment to meaningful gun safety laws, we have one of the lowest gun injury death rates in the country," he stressed.

The official explained that California has led the nation in passing gun safety laws. "We are grateful to now have a partner in the White House who knows we can, and must, do more to end gun violence."

And is that, Thursday morning, U.S. President Joseph Biden, called gun violence in the country as a "public health crisis" and an "epidemic".

He added that the number of mass shootings in the nation has become an "international embarrassment."

During a speech at the White House, where he announced executive actions to reduce gun violence, Biden told critics of gun reform that none of his executive actions contradict the Constitution.

"Nothing, nothing I'm going to recommend in any way affects the Second Amendment. These are bogus arguments that suggest that these are Second Amendment rights at stake that we're talking about. But no amendment, no amendment to the Constitution is absolute," he said.

President Biden's package of measures includes tighter restrictions on "ghost guns" - handmade or self-assembled firearms that do not have serial numbers - and stabilizing gun braces that allow guns to be used more accurately.

As well as having the Department of Justice model "red flag" laws for states that allow for the temporary removal of guns from people deemed at high risk of harming themselves or others, and a full report on firearms trafficking.

Also, invest in intervention programs in violence-prone communities.

It is worth noting that just this Wednesday there was a tragic mass shooting in Rock Hill, South Carolina, where six people were shot, five of whom were killed, including Dr. Robert Leslie, his wife Barbara and their two grandchildren - aged five and nine, respectively - as well as a person who worked for the family.

So far, investigations suggest that former NFL player Phillip Adams, 32, was the one who committed the terrible act, then committed suicide with a gun, in a house near where the murders were committed after a confrontation with police.

Mexico: Amnesty International warns of attacks on journalists by state agency Notimex

human rights
Editor. Peninsula 360 Press [P360P].

The international human rights organization Amnesty International -AI- reports in its annual report that the Mexican State News Agency -Notimex- has orchestrated defamatory campaigns against journalists through social networks.

The report is found in the section on Freedom of Expression and Assembly in the Mexico chapter, among the human rights violations in the country.

"In May, there were reports that Notimex, the state news agency, was involved in a defamatory campaign against several journalists and media outlets that published content critical of the government," the agency said in its 2020/21 report, released Wednesday.

"In May there was news that Notimex, the state news agency, was involved in a defamatory campaign against several journalists and media outlets that published content critical of the government," the document, released Wednesday, said.

In its 2020/21 report, the agency reports that the campaign included a network of bot programs and fake social media accounts allegedly financed with public funds.

Just a week ago, the U.S. State Department also included the case in the chapter dedicated to Mexico in its annual report on human rights.

The document accuses Notimex director Sanjuana Martínez of orchestrating a series of actions that threaten freedom of expression.

Section 2 of the report, Respect for Civil Liberties, which includes freedom of expression, states that Sanjuana Martínez Montemayor ordered journalists to remove or not publish content about certain institutions and government officials.

The above, he said at the time, according to an investigation by the renowned media outlet Aristegui Noticias, the academic project Signa Lab and the international human rights organization of journalists Article 19, which has been characterized by its criticism of the governments of different parties that Mexico has had.

On March 31, 2021, President Obrador publicly attacked the organization Artículo 19 during his morning press conference. 164 organizations, along with 400 activists, collectives, and media outlets, condemned the president's remarks and expressed their support for Artículo 19.

Amnesty International explains in its annual report that threats, harassment and attacks against media workers continued during 2020, with at least 19 journalists killed during the year, according to official data available in November.

It also notes that in September a letter signed by 650 journalists and intellectuals accused President Andrés Manuel López Obrador of actions that affect freedom of expression, including a series of public statements that weakened the press by fostering an environment conducive to censorship, administrative sanctions and the misuse of the law to intimidate the press.

On the other hand, it details that, in the last year, the Protection Mechanism for Human Rights Defenders and Journalists maintained protection measures in the country for 1,313 people, of which 426 were media workers.

However, in October, the federal government dissolved the trust fund that supported this protection mechanism, and its funds were transferred to the general public budget, according to the document.

On March 31, 2021, during his morning press conference, President Obrador attacked the organization Artículo 19 for pointing out that
