May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness month, so the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office calls for motorcycle safety awareness, reminding riders to always look twice, just in case a motorcycle is nearby.
At this, the bailiff Christina Corpus, called for safe driving and handling practices, and a shared responsibility of all road users to enable everyone to reach their destination safely.
"May is Motorcycle Safety Month, and it's crucial to take precautions while enjoying the open road," Corpus said in a statement.
In this regard, he recalled that wearing a helmet is essential and can save lives in the event of an accident.
“Always ride sober, obey traffic laws and be aware of your surroundings. Remember that motorcycles can be difficult for drivers to see, so be sure to wear brightly colored clothing and use reflective items. Let’s work together to make our roads safer for everyone. Have a safe and enjoyable ride,” he stressed.
To help protect you and your family, keep the following tips in mind while driving or riding a bicycle:
drivers
- Always check your mirrors and blind spots before changing lanes.
- Do not follow a motorcycle too closely. Always keep a safe distance.
- If you see a motorcycle with its turn signal on, be careful. Make sure the rider is turning before proceeding.
motorcyclists
- Always wear a helmet that meets U.S. Department of Transportation standards with eye protection.
- Wear leather or other sturdy clothing, such as a jacket, pants, non-slip-soled boots, and gloves. Add reflective stripes or stickers to your clothing and motorcycle to make it easier for other drivers to see you.
- Drive defensively. Don't assume a driver can see you. Avoid being in the driver's blind spot.
- Always keep your lights on, even during the day.
