The United States Department of Justice reported that Ismael Zambada Garcia (El Mayo) and Joaquin Guzman Lopez, both leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel, were arrested this Thursday, July 25 in El Paso, Texas.

“The Department of Justice has arrested two additional alleged leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel, one of the most violent and powerful drug trafficking organizations in the world. Ismael Zambada García, or 'El Mayo,' co-founder of the Cartel, and Joaquín Guzmán López, son of its other co-founder, were arrested today in El Paso, Texas,” said U.S. Attorney General Merrick B. Garland.

In a brief statement, the prosecution highlighted that both men face multiple charges in the United States for leading the Sinaloa Cartel's criminal operations, including its lethal fentanyl manufacturing and trafficking networks.

“El Mayo” and Guzmán López join a growing list of Sinaloa Cartel leaders and associates whom the Justice Department is holding accountable in the United States; among them are the cartel’s other co-founder, Joaquín Guzmán Loera, or “El Chapo”; another of El Chapo’s sons and alleged Cartel leader, Ovidio Guzmán López; and the Cartel’s alleged top hitman, Néstor Isidro Pérez Salas, or “El Nini.”

“Fentanyl is the most lethal drug threat our country has ever faced, and the Department of Justice will not rest until every leader, member, and associate of the cartels responsible for poisoning our communities is held accountable,” Garland said.
