- With the use of violence, dozens of people stormed into the Capitol Hill as a rejection of the ratification of Joe Biden as successor to the U.S. presidency.
- So far, riot police, national guard and FBI are guarding the area. Mayor Muriel Bowser declared a curfew in the District of Columbia starting at 6 p.m.
- Twitter, Facebook and YouTube blocked a video of President Donald Trump where he belatedly addressed his followers to "go home" and reiterated election fraud.
- Twitter blocked access to President Donald Trump's account for 12 hours.
"Save America" was the event at which Donald Trump called on his supporters to gather in Washington, District of Columbia this Tuesday morning from 11 am local time.
Initially, the organizers of the event expected a maximum of 30,000 people; however, approximately 200,000 people attended the call.
Rudy Giuliani, the attorney for Donald Trump, who was charged with challenging the results of the Nov. 3 general election won by Democrat Joe Biden, opened the event after 11 a.m., justifying it as "legal and proper" under the circumstances.
Later, around 12 noon, with racist and xenophobic phrases, Donald Trump continued with the event and declared that: "The media has been our biggest problem". "They stole the election from us like never before." "We will not give up and we will not give in, we will not take it anymore." "It's a disgrace. Elections in the third world are more honest." "I will not let the voices be silenced."
While this was happening, the U.S. Congress was in session to release the final results of the electoral college so that the U.S. Senate could ratify President-elect Joe Biden's victory. In that session, Vice President Mike Pence was present.
At the same time as the US Congress was in session, outgoing President Donald J. Trump began to incite his followers: "Now we're going to walk to the Capitol ... We demand that Congress do the right thing and only count the electors of valid votes. We will march in a peaceful and patriotic manner"; however, unfortunately, the last part of Trump's sentence was omitted by his followers.
The U.S. Senate and House of Representatives abruptly suspended debate on the Electoral College.
An extraordinary recess was called after the riots that began at the end of Donald Trump's speech and, with it, the "Save America" event.
Congressmen and Vice President Mike Pence were evacuated upon learning what was happening on Capitol Hill. Meanwhile, an armed demonstration was reported outside where several people were injured. A violent horde attacked the U.S. Capitol facility, violating national security.
With an embarrassing delay, Donald Trump, president of the United States, who had previously encouraged his followers to reach the Capitol, posted a video message on his social networks calling on his followers to stay vigilant and go home, not without reminding them first, without any evidence, that election fraud had been committed. To prevent such false information from spreading, the social networks Twitter, Facebook and YouTube removed the video from their platforms, but which other news outlets had recovered; however, no conventional media offered to replicate it.
After the video was posted and blocked, it was reported that a woman had been shot inside the Capitol. Minutes later, it was reported on social networks that the woman had died. The woman was later identified as Ashli Babbitt, a San Diego Air Force veteran.
President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris spoke about the unrest in the U.S. capital:
The members of the U.S. Congress returned to the Capitol around 8 p.m. to continue the session where they will have to certify the results of the electoral college. Both Democratic and Republican senators have rejected any deliberate act that threatens U.S. democracy.
The D.C. area is guarded by riot police, the National Guard and the FBI. The curfew is scheduled for 6 a.m. on January 7.
