Another major storm will drench the Bay Area and Central Coast later this week, according to weather experts, bringing strong winds, heavy rain and a renewed risk of flooding to the entire region.

While showers are likely through Thursday, according to the National Weather Service's San Francisco Bay Area office, a possible atmospheric river could enter the area Thursday night.

Weather officials described the incoming storm as a "conveyor belt of moisture" entering the region from the tropics in the Pacific Ocean, with an increasing chance of several inches of rain.

"Given flooding concerns from mostly saturated soils, it seems reasonable," NWS Bay Area meteorologists said Monday. "A hydrologic outlook may be needed later in the week to address flooding concerns."

As of Monday afternoon, areas most at risk of more than 2 inches of rain include the North Bay, elevated parts of the peninsula in San Mateo County, southern Monterey County, and the Central Valley.

The region is also set to see potentially record low temperatures mid-week, while temperatures will generally remain below normal throughout the Bay Area all week.
