NHK, Japan's public broadcaster, said that, according to a statement from the airline, all passengers and crew were evacuated. While the death of the 5 members of the Coast Guard was confirmed by Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in a press conference.

Those who died in this tragedy were carrying supplies to the places affected by the strong earthquake that hit western Japan.

Kishida expressed deep condolences to the families of those who died over the tragedy. "They went with a certain sense of mission and it is extremely regrettable and distressing what has happened to them," the prime minister said.

Although the tragedy once again shook the Japanese, the prime minister made it clear that relief efforts for areas affected by the earthquake that has left at least 48 people dead will not be affected.

After the heartbreaking images showing the Japan Airlines plane, an Airbus A350-900, engulfed in flames, the NHK network stated that the aircraft, with flight number 516, took off from New Chitose airport, in Hokkaido prefecture, to the north of the country, and was scheduled to land in Haneda at 5:40 p.m.

So far no further details have been given about the cause of the accident.
