At 8:00 a.m. central time, the polls opened in Mexico and the elections began on June 2, 2024, in which, among other positions, Mexicans will decide who will be the next president. of the Mexican Republic.
Since the transition to democracy in the 1990s, Mexico has witnessed a constant process of political, economic and social change. In each election, Mexican citizens have the opportunity to elect their leaders and define the direction of the country. In this election, Mexicans in the country and abroad will choose between Xóchitl Gálvez, candidate of the ?Fuerza y Corazón por México? coalition. made up of the National Action Party (PAN), the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) and the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD); Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, candidate of the "Let's Keep Making History" alliance, made up of Morena, the Labor Party (PT) and the Green Ecologist Party of Mexico (PVEM); and Jorge Álvarez Máynez, candidate of the Citizen Movement (MC).
Federally, Mexicans will elect 629 positions: 1 presidency of the Republic, 500 deputies, and 128 senators.
At the local level, there will be 20,079 positions up for voting: 9 governorships, 1,802 municipal presidencies, 431 auxiliary positions, 1,975 union positions, 1,098 congress members, and 14,764 council members.
According to the National Electoral Institute (INE), there is 99.98 percent coverage of the national nominal list, which is 98 million 329 thousand 591 people with respect to the national electoral roll, which consists of 98 million 472 thousand 789.
Of the national nominal list, 51 million 103 thousand 424 are women, 47 million 226 thousand 062 are men, and 105 are non-binary.
It should be noted that the current credentials nationwide are 98 million 409 thousand 061; while abroad there are 675 thousand 127, for a total of 99 million 084 thousand 188.
From abroad, Mexicans will be able to vote for presidency (all entities), senatorial office (all entities), governorship (Chiapas, Guanajuato, Jalisco, Morelos, Puebla and Yucatán), head of government (Mexico City), migrant council ( Mexico City and Oaxaca), proportional representation deputation (Jalisco and State of Mexico).
As for consular offices, there are 20 in the United States, 1 in Canada and 2 in Europe.
