Redwood City Library goes against the book ban

Redwood City Library Foundation Board Member Gina Meyers is clear: “After doing research, we found that over the past few years, the number of books that have been banned across the country, in different areas, has increased dramatically.”

According to PEN (Poets, Essayists, Novelists) USA, from July 2021 to March 2022, 1,145 titles by 874 writers in 86 school districts across 26 states were affected. Texas tops the list with 713 titles.

Among the efforts that have been made at the national level to revoke these threats and prohibitions, the auction of a "fireproof" specimen of The Handmaid's Tale, by Margaret Atwood for 130 thousand dollars. But that group of people wasn’t happy with it staying there, so they started a campaign to convince the community to vote NO in an upcoming referendum to fund the library.”

The graphic novel in question is Gender Queer: A Memoir, by Maia Kobabe, an autobiography in which the author comes to terms with being non-binary. It is the most banned book in the United States according to The New York Times.

After the Patmos library was effectively left without these funds, anonymous donors managed to raise $245,000 in two campaigns on the online platform GoFundMe, of which $50,000 came from the novelist's own pocket Nora Roberts.

According to the American Library Association, banning and/or threatening books causes significant harm to communities: “Students cannot access critical information that helps them understand themselves and the world around them. «Este 11 de septiembre marca 21 años desde que los inconcebibles ataques del 11 de septiembre de 2001 cobraron casi tres mil vidas y cambiaron irrevocablemente nuestro mundo», señaló la proclamación emitida ayer.

Destacó que, desde entonces, cada año, se ha conmemorado el sombrío aniversario como el Día del Patriota «para recordar a aquellos que perdimos y honrar a los valientes socorristas y hombres y mujeres de todos los ámbitos de la vida que tomaron medidas para proteger a sus compatriotas estadounidenses».

Nine-year-old children have been particularly affected by COVID-19, because beyond what it caused on an emotional or even physical level, their education was brutally affected, since according to the results of a national test, the pandemic erased two decades of progress in mathematics and reading for that group of the population.

For the first time since National Assessment of Educational Progress tests began tracking student knowledge in the 1970s, 9-year-olds' math and reading performance has fallen to levels seen two decades ago.

These devastating effects cut across nearly all ethnicities and income levels, but were markedly worse for the lowest-performing students.

While those in the top 90th percentile showed a modest drop, three points in math, students in the bottom 10th percentile dropped 12 points in math, four times the impact.

In math, African-American students lost 13 points, compared with five points among white students, widening the gap between the two groups.

The study also highlighted the profound effect that school closures had on low-income students, especially African Americans and Latinos.

The decline in test scores means that while many 9-year-olds can demonstrate partial understanding of what they are reading, fewer can infer a character's feelings from what they have read.

In math, students may know simple arithmetic operations, but they have a harder time adding fractions with common denominators.

The setbacks could have powerful consequences for a generation of children who must go beyond the basics in elementary school to thrive later in life.

“Students’ test scores, even as early as first, second and third grade, are really very predictive of their success later in school and their educational trajectories in general,” Susanna Loeb, director of the Annenberg Institute at Brown University, which focuses on educational inequality, told The New York Times.

"The main reason for concern is the lower performance of the lowest-performing children," he added.

In this regard, she pointed out that such a delay could lead to disconnection from school, which would make it less likely that they would graduate from high school or attend university.

The National Assessment of Educational Progress is considered a gold standard in testing. Unlike state tests, it is standardized across the country, has remained consistent over time and does not attempt to hold individual schools accountable for results, which experts say makes it more reliable.

While scores in reading and especially math have generally trended upward or remained steady since the test began in 1970, including a period of strong progress from the late 1990s to the mid-2000s, the pandemic and school closures that forced schools to move to a fully online system left children scrambling to learn from home.

In some parts of the country, the worst of the disruptions were short-lived and schools reopened that fall, but in other areas, particularly large cities with large populations of low-income students and students of color, schools remained closed for many months and some did not fully reopen until last year.

There are signs that students who have fully returned to school have begun learning at a normal pace, but experts say it will take more than a typical school day to make up for gaps created by the pandemic.

He was an eternal candidate for the Nobel Prize in Literature and a Knight of the Order of Letters, as well as winner of many very important literary awards, such as the José Donoso, the Formentor de las Letras and the Library Lion of the New York Public Library. He received these numerous awards because he dedicated his entire life to writing and did so with skill and quality. A year and a half after their appearance, the Moderna and Pfizer BioNTech COVID-19 vaccines have been updated and approved by the CDC after authorization from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Although they have contributed to the decrease in COVID-19 mortality rates worldwide, it has become necessary to expand protection against the new omicron BA.4 and BA.5 variants.

“The updated COVID-19 boosters are formulated to better protect against the most recently circulating COVID-19 variant. They can help restore protection that has waned since previous vaccination and are designed to provide broader protection against new variants. This recommendation is the result of a thorough scientific evaluation and intense scientific debate,” said CDC Director Rochelle Walensky.

The vaccine has been a great help during the pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, reducing not only the number of deaths worldwide but also complications from the disease.

"I think it's important to have at least one annual booster shot that contains the most up-to-date protection," said Gil Chavez, deputy director of the Center for Infectious Diseases at the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), at a press conference organized by Ethnic Media Services and the Vaccinate All 58 campaign.

«Ayer, nuestra comunidad se conmocionó por el trágico asesinato de una joven madre en nuestra comunidad. Gracias a la rápida reacción de los vecinos que llamaron al 911, los agentes de San Carlos pudieron responder rápidamente e inmediatamente detener a un sospechoso. Parece que la víctima y los sospechosos se conocían», señaló.

El jueves 8 de septiembre, investigadores señalaron que Karina Castro, madre de dos niñas pequeñas, de 7 y 1 años, fue presuntamente asesinada por su ex novio, José Landaeta Solano, quien pudo haber utilizado una espada samurái para decapitarla.

En los homicidios en los que se pudieron identificar las circunstancias, el 74 por ciento ‒106 de 144‒ no estaban relacionados con la comisión de ningún otro delito. De ellos, el 88 por ciento ‒93 homicidios‒ tuvieron que ver con discusiones entre la víctima y el agresor.

Los ataques contra mujeres siguen avanzando en todo el país, dejando a miles de niños indefensos y ante la incertidumbre de que les depare sus vidas sin la presencia de sus madres. Situación que debe alertar a autoridades sobre protecciones más contundentes para las víctimas, así como una mayor atención en materia de salud mental.

El calor no da tregua en el Área de la Bahía, al igual que las noticias, y estas son las noticias locales del 5 al 10 de septiembre que debes conocer para estar al día.

During the month of August, the Redwood City Police Department confiscated three firearms from juveniles in three separate incidents. While there does not appear to be any connection between the incidents at this time, in total, six juveniles and three adults have been arrested or charged with illegal firearm possession.

Local authorities said August was a "busy month" in this regard, which has raised alarm bells.

Most of the seized firearms were stolen or unregistered, so-called “ghost guns” – a weapon that lacks a serial number and is typically assembled by the user.

El Operador Independiente del Sistema de California mantiene una Alerta Flex en todo el Estado, debido a la ola de calor que afecta a toda California, registrándose temperaturas récord en ciudades como San Francisco y Redwood City, entre otras.

Los bomberos extinguieron un incendio en una estructura cerca de Pacifica el viernes pasado antes de que se extendiera más allá del edificio.

Los equipos de la División de Prevención de Incendios de la Autoridad de Bomberos del Norte del Condado de San Mateo respondieron al incendio en 100 Shamrock Ranch Rd. a las 14:26 horas con un total de seis compañías de bomberos, según un comunicado el domingo.

Una operación de búsqueda y rescate determinó que no había nadie adentro en ese momento y no se reportaron heridos. La causa del incendio está bajo investigación.

Once ciudades en el Área de la Bahía establecieron temperaturas altas récord el lunes, según el Servicio Meteorológico Nacional.

Livermore obtuvo los máximos honores con la temperatura récord más alta de 116 grados, que rompió no solo el récord diario del 5 de septiembre, sino también la temperatura más alta jamás registrada en esa ciudad. El máximo histórico anterior fue 115 registrado en 1950 y el récord anterior para el 5 de septiembre fue 108 registrado, también registrado en 1950.

Las máximas en Gilroy y Santa Rosa llegaron a 112, lo que estableció récords para la fecha y el mes. El máximo de Gilroy empató su récord de septiembre establecido en 2017 y 2020.

Un jurado federal condenó el lunes al presidente de una empresa de tecnología médica con sede en Silicon-Valley por un esquema que involucra reclamos falsos y fraudulentos de COVID-19.

Mark Schena, de 59 años, de Los Altos, era el presidente de Arrayit Corporation y participó en un esquema para defraudar a los inversionistas de la empresa. Schena afirmó que había inventado una tecnología «revolucionaria» para detectar prácticamente cualquier enfermedad usando solo unas gotas de sangre, una afirmación similar a la de la deshonrada directora ejecutiva de Theranos, Elizabeth Holmes, quien también fue condenada por defraudar a los inversores con la misma afirmación.

Schena será sentenciado el 30 de enero de 2023 y enfrenta un máximo de 65 años en una prisión federal.

Luego de dos años en los que la celebración se vio interrumpida por la pandemia, el Consulado General de México en San Francisco informó que la Ceremonia Oficial por la Celebración del 212o Aniversario de la Independencia de México se llevará a cabo el 15 de septiembre en el Civic Center Palza.

Los asistentes podrán disfrutar de música y una colorida celebración para dar «el grito» de independencia el jueves 15 de septiembre de 16:00 a 19:00 horas en el Civic Center Plaza, ubicado en el 335 de McCallister St. en San Francisco.

Cabe destacar que por vez primera la cónsul General de México, Remedios Gómez Arnau, dará el Grito de Independencia desde el Balcón de la Alcaldía de la ciudad de San Francisco, con la Alcaldesa London Breedas guest of honor.

El ejecutivo del condado de San Mateo, Mike Callagy, publicó este miércoles una propuesta de presupuesto final para San Mateo que se enfoca en objetivos a largo plazo, como terminar con la falta de vivienda, promover una recuperación económica de COVID-19 basada en la equidad; y la creación de edificios públicos modernos y eficientes.

La propuesta incluye 134.4 millones de dólares en fondos de la Ley del Plan de Rescate Estadounidense de 2021 ‒ARPA, por sus siglas en inglés‒ para ayudar a las comunidades más afectadas por la pandemia.

A su vez, propone 185.7 millones de dólares para impulsar los esfuerzos del condado para terminar efectivamente con la falta de vivienda mediante el aumento de los servicios de apoyo para prevenir la falta de vivienda y la construcción de hogares asequibles permanentes.

Local public safety agencies throughout San Mateo County will participate in the 20th Annual Countywide Public Safety Memorial Service on Sunday, September 11.

Authorities have invited the community to this special annual commemoration to honor fallen law enforcement personnel, which is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the Cunningham Memorial Chapel at Notre Dame de Namur University, located at 1500 Ralston Avenue in Belmont.

The service will be nondenominational and will be followed by an informal reception.

Bolsonaro manipulates Bicentennial of Independence in Brazil

¿Qué se esperaría al conmemorarse el Bicentenario de la Independencia en Brasil? ¿Cómo sería el desfile oficial de la Independencia, que ocurre todos los años en Brasil el día 7 de septiembre, en Brasilia, la capital del país?

Tras dos años sin esta conmemoración oficial, por cuenta de las restricciones impuestas debido a la pandemia, el 7 de septiembre de este 2022 se celebró el Bicentenario de la Independencia de Brasil, a tan solo 25 días de las elecciones. En esta fecha, todos los años, en el Eixo Monumental, vía donde se localiza la Esplanada dos Ministérios, lugar de Brasília que abriga los ministerios y organismos del Poder Ejecutivo, desfilan por la avenida tropas militares, blindados y miembros de diversas instituciones policiales.

Lo que debería ser la fiesta del pueblo y una oportunidad educativa para que la historia del proceso de ruptura jurídico-política entre colonia y metrópolis nos fuese contada, que los 200 años de ese acontecimiento histórico fuera de alguna manera recordado, llenando de sentido a la palabra conmemoración, pasó a ser un mero desfile exhibicionista de tropas militares sin una aparente propuesta pedagógica que dio lugar a un acto de campaña de un presidente desesperado por una reelección.

La independencia es un marco histórico, es cuando Brasil pasa a ser jurídicamente independiente de Portugal a partir de la ruptura del nexo colonial. Sin embargo, podemos decir que la «independencia» hasta los días de hoy solo ha ocurrido mismo en el ámbito jurídico-administrativo; no ha tocado en otras formas de dependencia del norte global, que son las epistémicas, raciales, de género, etcétera.

Eso se veía en las franjas presentes del desfile, que contenían además de consignas en portugués, mensajes sobre todo en inglés, pero también en alemán, como esta que dice «Raus aus dem kommunismus wir wollen Bolsonaro» ‒Fuera el comunismo, nosotros queremos Bolsonaro‒.

Los partidarios del presidente, que fueron a Brasilia desde diversos lugares del país para demostrarle apoyo, vestían verde y amarrillo, los colores de la bandera, y llevaban consigo pancartas antidemocráticas, que pedían la intervención militar, la salida de los ministros del Supremo Tribunal Federal ‒la corte suprema de justicia‒, la criminalización del comunismo en Brasil, una nueva constitución anticomunista, entre otras demandas con contenido golpista.

Llama la atención cuando el público grita «prende o Lula» y «Lula ladrão, seu lugar é na prisão» en el momento en que desfilan los coches de la Policía Federal. Eso porque el expresidente Lula, principal opositor de Bolsonaro, estuvo detenido en la sede de la Policía Federal en la ciudad de Curitiba por 580 días. Los gritos para que lo detengan demuestran la voluntad de que se repita lo que ocurrió en las elecciones pasadas, en 2018, cuando Lula no pudo disputar la presidencia en el momento en que las encuestas lo ratificaban como favorito.

Después del desfile, el presidente subió a un escenario montado en el medio de la Esplanada dos Ministérios y discursó para sus seguidores. Estuvo acompañado por la primera dama, Michelle Bolsonaro, y por un empresario que está siendo investigado por un operativo de la Policía Federal, Luciano Hang. Este año no asistieron los presidentes del Senado, Rodrigo Pacheco y de la Cámara de Diputados, Artur Lira, quienes tradicionalmente participan en el evento. En el acto también participaron los presidentes de Portugal, Cabo Verde y Guinea-Bissau.

En el discurso para sus seguidores, Bolsonaro no fue moderado en proferir alabanzas a su gobierno que no condicen con la realidad. En cambio, hizo críticas a las gestiones del Partido de los Trabajadores y, usando el discurso de Dios y la familia, comparó las elecciones actuales a una lucha del bien contra el mal. Asimismo, insufló a los manifestantes en contra el Supremo Tribunal Federal. La cereza del pastel fue cuando hizo comparaciones entre las primeras damas y se presentó como un hombre.

El acto del Día de la Independencia, que debería ser de Estado, se convirtió en una plataforma de campaña para el presidente Jair Bolsonaro. Aprovechándose de tener la máquina estatal en sus manos, usó para su promoción personal eventos de Estado, financiados con dinero público, lo que hizo que las campañas de otros candidatos manifestaran que interpondrán demandas en la Justicia Electoral en contra del mandatario por abuso de poder político y económico en la realización de los eventos realizados en Brasília y en Rio de Janeiro.

En las redes sociales, Lula celebró el Bicentenario de la Independencia. Dijo que Brasil va a reconquistar su bandera, soberanía y democracia:

«En ningún momento usamos el Día de la Patria, el día del pueblo brasileño, el día más grande de nuestro país por cuenta la independencia como instrumento de la política electoral. Y el presidente, en lugar de discutir los problemas de Brasil […] trata de hablar de campaña política y trata de atacarme».
