E. coli outbreak progresses in U.S. with no known source yet

E. coli in the U.S.
CDC photo, E. coli

What you should do

  • Report your illness to your local or state health department.

San Francisco firefighters donate equipment to Colima

Redwood City and Colima resume and strengthen relationship as sister cities

By Pamela Cruz, Anna Lee Mraz and Manuel Ortiz – Peninsula 360 Press

With the donation of two fire trucks belonging to the Redwood City Fire Department to the city of Colima, Mexico, the brotherhood between these two cities, which dates back to 1998, was resumed and strengthened.

The event, co-organized by Redwood City International, took place at Redwood City Hall, where the mayors of Redwood City and Colima, which are sister cities, pledged to strengthen ties with the goal of improving the living conditions of their residents.

“Today we are here to renew our brotherhood with the city of Colima. We will be donating two of our fire trucks to Colima. The firefighters arrived on Sunday and have been training with ours all week. And I understand they will also have some fun visits in San Francisco. So, today we renew the relationship, strengthen it and look forward to future visits,” he said. Giselle HaleMayor of Redwood City.

For her part, the mayor of Colima, Margarita Moreno She recalled that both cities had been sister cities since March 1998, however, the relationship had been somewhat lost "and today we have come to reaffirm and endorse that relationship that I am sure will bear great fruit."

"We are very grateful because we are already going with two fire trucks that will be very useful for the families of Colima, in addition to different equipment such as helmets and clothing that they are giving us for the firefighters of Colima, but I think it will be a very good collaboration. Always, when you work as a team, you get more results," he added in an interview with P360P.

Enrique Morales, a member of the Colima Volunteer Fire Department, stressed that the most important thing for them is the reestablished brotherhood and the learning obtained during the training sessions carried out during the week.

"The most important thing for us is the brotherhood that has been reestablished after several years between the city of Redwood City and Colima. Friendship is the main thing, but we also take away lessons," said Morales.

He recalled that, since last Sunday, three firefighters from Colima were able to participate in training on the handling and movement of units, handling of jets, and the extraction of people trapped in vehicles, among others.

He also expressed his gratitude for the donation of fire trucks and equipment.

"We have three emergency response vehicles, and all three were donated approximately 13 years ago by the City of Redwood City," he said.

"Know that in Colima you have brother firefighters and that we will always be grateful for everything that the city of Redwood has done for Colima, because it means saving lives. Even though the firefighters and citizens are here in Redwood City, they are saving lives from here with the donation of equipment."

For his part, Redwood City Fire Chief Ray Iverson thanked the Colima delegation and the volunteer firefighters of this city for their assistance. He noted that the Redwood City fire department has enjoyed the brotherhood and solidarity generated with the Colima firefighters.

“I know our firefighters have enjoyed the camaraderie and relationships we have established and built while working together these past few days. We look forward to building on these relationships now and even more in the future and we look forward to returning to Colima someday with some of our members to enjoy continuing that relationship,” Iverson said.

Elyse Gainor, President of Redwood City International, expressed her enthusiasm for the event and expressed her hope that bilateral learning will grow during the Colima delegation's stay in Redwood City.

"We hope this is the beginning of a bright new chapter in our sister city relationship," he said.

Elmer Rodriguez, the newest member of the Redwood City Council, expressed his excitement about the event and meeting the people from Mexico.

“We are here celebrating our relationship with our sister city Colima, Mexico. We have volunteers, firefighters, the mayor of their city and some of the other leaders here to accept some of our fire trucks that are being rotated in. We are very excited to be able to meet so many good people from Colima and to be able to extend this partnership between our cities,” he said.

For Dani Caballero, a Redwood City firefighter, he recognized the work and enthusiasm of the three elements from Mexico who were in training.

"Three firefighters from Colima have been with us all week and we have had training in cutting cars, breaking and entering, putting out fires, something different every day. We want to be with them to get to know them. They have a lot of stories, a lot of experience and what we want to do is continue the relationship between Redwood City and Colima with some new firefighters who can continue here with them," he said.

It is worth noting that the sister city relationship between Redwood City and Colima was forged in 1998, “and since then it has been a fruitful relationship, we have donated fire trucks, clothing and fire equipment. We have received several other delegations from Colima in the past, Redwood City has also made visits and there was also the inauguration of the new city hall in 1997,” recalled Giselle Hale.

California will refer to simian pox as "MPX" to avoid stigmatization of the name.

MPX
This 2003 electron microscopy (EM) image shows a monkeypox virion, obtained from a clinical specimen associated with the 2003 prairie dog outbreak. It was a thin-section image of a human skin sample. On the left were the oval-shaped mature virus particles, and on the right were the crescent-shaped and spherical immature virion particles.

By Eli Walsh. Bay City News.

The California Department of Public Health said it will refer to the virus as monkeypox in the first reference in a written communication and the abbreviation, pronounced M-pox, in all subsequent references. State officials will also call the virus MPX when speaking.

“The California Department of Public Health is aware of concerns about the stigma associated with the name monkeypox, including racist connotations,” said Dr. Tomas Aragon, state public health officer and director of CDPH.

"As such, CDPH has switched to using the acronym MPX while the World Health Organization explores renaming the disease," it said.

The WHO issued a set of best practices in 2015 for disease naming, recommending that geographic locations, names of people, species of animals or foods, and cultural, population or occupational references be avoided in colloquial names of viruses and diseases.

“This may seem like a trivial issue to some, but disease names really matter to the people directly affected,” said Dr Keiji Fukuda, WHO assistant director-general from 2009 to 2016, in 2015.

"We have seen that certain disease names provoke a backlash against members of particular religious or ethnic communities, create unjustified barriers to travel and trade, and trigger the unnecessary killing of animals intended for food," Fukuda said.

As of Wednesday, 3,065 probable and confirmed cases of MPX have been reported statewide, including in the 11-county Bay Area.

San Francisco continues to have the second-highest number of reported cases in the state with 656.

San Mateo County has named Dr. Jei Africa as the new Deputy Director of the Human Services Agency, continuing the work of providing assistance to those most in need in the area.

So the longtime health and behavioral health leader in both San Mateo County and elsewhere joined the Human Services Agency (HSA) this week as its new deputy director to help people “thrive.”

Dr. Jei Africa most recently served as Director of Behavioral Health and Recovery Services for Marin County, where he focused on expanding outreach to underserved communities, expanded the continuum of care for clients, and led the acquisition of several critical residential facility projects for individuals with mental health and substance abuse conditions.

Prior to that role, Africa served for more than a decade as director of the Office of Diversity and Equity within the San Mateo County Health Department.

Africa is the first openly transgender county behavioral health director in the United States, who was instrumental in opening a transgender health clinic and spearheaded the development of the first multidisciplinary LGBTQ+ community behavioral health center in San Mateo County.

“I am excited to be back in San Mateo County, where I live and where I began my career in public service. I am hopeful that my experience will help improve and elevate HSA’s efforts to help those in need of support and services, so they can thrive,” Africa said.

“I look forward to working in partnership with staff, clients and residents and other community partners to ensure our services are accessible, equitable and customer-centered,” she added.

Ken Cole, director of the Human Services Agency, praised Africa's experience and leadership.

“Jei Africa brings a wealth of knowledge, experience and intelligence to his new role as HSA Deputy Agency Director. He is a proven leader who cares deeply about equity, our agency’s mission and the overall well-being of those in need,” Cole said. “We are fortunate to have him join our leadership team.”

Africa holds a PhD in Clinical Psychology and an MA in Clinical Psychology from Alliant International University/California School of Professional Psychology and a postdoctoral MS in Clinical Psychopharmacology.

In addition, Africa also earned a Bachelor of Social Sciences degree from the University of the Philippines – Manila, in behavioral sciences.

Inauguration of INEA's "Plaza Comunitaria" in Redwood City

community square

By Laura Rubio, student of the Community Journalism Workshop of Peninsula 360 Press, with the support of Silicon Valley Community Foundation.

This Wednesday morning, Casa Círculo Cultural held the inauguration of the “Community Plaza” program at 3090 Middlefield Rd. in Redwood City.

The inauguration was attended by engineer Luis Gutiérrez, director of the Institute of Mexicans Abroad –IME–; Remedios Gómez Arnau, Consul General of Mexico in San Francisco; Julio Huerta, Consul for Community and Cultural Affairs; as well as Giselle Hale, Mayor of Redwood City.

The program, sponsored by the National Institute for Adult Education in Mexico (INEA), seeks to support young people over 15 years of age and Spanish-speaking immigrant adults to begin or finish their primary or secondary education in the Spanish language.

"There will be the opportunity to connect with Mexico and finish primary or secondary school. If they never did it in Mexico, they can start here at their own pace," said Remedios Gómez Arnau, who also pointed out the opportunity for students to enter the online system of higher secondary education offered by the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and the one offered by the Secretariat of Public Education of the Government of Mexico (SEP).

For his part, Luis González pointed out that through 40 universities in Mexico "access to online university programs is being promoted - at a distance - so that people can continue studying and that resources or time are not a limitation."

In addition to literacy, the program offers the opportunity to access technological resources, job training, and preparation for the General Education Development (GED) test.

Likewise, those who complete primary or secondary education can obtain a certificate of studies endorsed by the SEP, which is valid both in Mexico and the United States.

"This is an opportunity for all the people who emigrated and were unable to finish school in Mexico, so that they can finish their education remotely, get their certificate and it will help them continue to progress in life," said Luis Gutiérrez.

González also said that, if more information is required, interested parties can go to the educational guidance window at the San Francisco consulate from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. or send an email to consfrancisco@sre.gob.mx.

Anna Lee Mraz, project coordinator at Casa Círculo Cultural, pointed out that "it is very important that there are opportunities like the Community Plaza to advance educational issues, since many times migrants travel and do not finish their studies there, and education is always a way to strengthen the community, broaden horizons and opportunities for all migrants."

In this regard, the mayor of Redwood City explained that "education is a gateway to more opportunities."

U.S. threatens journalistic freedom through Julian Assange

Special by Cristian Carlos

Julian Assange

The recent decision by the US Department of Justice to prosecute the founder of WikiLeaks, Julian Assange, for espionage and solicitation of computer hacking represents a setback for the supposed freedom that the United States claims to have. It is not the first time WikiLeaks has been accused of crimes, but it is the first time that charges have been brought against a news organization. The most important thing about this case is that it shows how easy it is for the powerful to manipulate the law and silence their opponents.

In a democracy, there are two main ways to criticize or protest against a government's
government: through non-violent protests or through media exposure
communication. With the extradition of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to the United States
United, we see a contradiction with the journalistic freedom of the country of “In God we trust.” The First Amendment of the United States protects journalists and whistleblowers from government persecution, and the extradition of Assange would undermine that protection by sending an unequivocal message that those who publish critical information—which must be known because it concerns their citizens, such as their spying—can be silenced.

In authoritarian regimes such as those in Russia and China, such acts are considered illegal and can lead to imprisonment or death. So what does the US intend to do with Julian Assange as a journalist if it succeeds in extraditing him? The pursuit of Assange shows how dangerous this situation can be. Not only was corruption at the top of the American elite – both business and political – and in other countries exposed, but it was also exposing corruption at lower levels. In other words, US “justice” wants revenge on Assange for “saying things” that threatened its own interests.

Assange, for those who don't know, is the founder of WikiLeaks, a global organization that publishes information through an online repository that has brought to light several scandals that could cause international incidents.

The group began rocking the Internet in 2010 and has since published more than 10 million documents. To name a few, WikiLeaks exposed a mass surveillance program called Prism that gave the U.S. government access to data from technology companies like Google and Microsoft; published thousands of State Department cables detailing U.S. diplomatic efforts around the world; and published information about the global financial crisis, helping people better understand the onset of the recession and the role Wall Street played in it. WikiLeaks’ work has led to numerous cases.

That same year, the group founded by Assange released a video showing footage of the massacre of Iraqi civilians by US soldiers. In 2013, it published hundreds of thousands of diplomatic cables from US embassies around the world. The biggest scandal came with the leak of the Panama Papers in 2016, which uncovered evidence of tax evasion by wealthy individuals and companies around the world.

Its explosive release of thousands of classified documents has revealed the inner workings of some of the world’s most secretive institutions, including the Pentagon and the U.S. State Department. In 2012, after publishing diplomatic cables exposing U.S. surveillance programs, WikiLeaks won the right to an interview with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton by then-CBS news anchor Charlie Rose. The following year, it published more than 250,000 emails from the Democratic National Committee that exposed a wide range of unprofessional and unethical actions by party officials.

As a result, the Democratic National Committee had to remove several senior members of its leadership team over the email scandal. In October 2016, WikiLeaks published emails from Hillary Clinton's campaign manager John Podesta showing him discussing how to undermine her rival Bernie Sanders by questioning his loyalty to the Democratic Party.

WikiLeaks is not only synonymous with document leaks, but also with activism, having been involved in several political campaigns. In 2010, for example, it worked with activists on a campaign to free political prisoners in Iceland. And in 2011, it played a key role in organizing protests against the former president of Kazakhstan, accused of corruption and human rights abuses. In 2017 alone, WikiLeaks published more than a million documents related to the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, that of Donald Trump.

The persecution of Assange and other journalists affiliated with WikiLeaks is a clear violation of their rights to freedom of expression, freedom of the press and freedom of association. It also poses a direct threat to the safety of journalists around the world.

Silencing Assange and his colleagues will only embolden governments who would like nothing more than to silence any dissenting voice.

To protect Assange and all other journalists seeking to hold power to account, we must unite now. We cannot allow a small group of individuals with authoritarian tendencies to take advantage of this moment in history and silence those who are willing to speak truth to power. We must make our voices heard now, before it is too late.

As the preponderant nation in the Americas, the United States has a unique opportunity to lead by example when it comes to protecting the rights of journalists. By standing up for journalists around the world, we can send a strong message that those who challenge our government will not be silenced.

When governments withhold information, they are also censoring their citizens.

Journalist Fredid Román murdered in Mexico

On the evening of Monday, August 22, journalist Fredid Román Román, who directed the media outlet La Realidad de Guerrero, was murdered in Mexico. With him, 15 journalists have been killed in the neighboring country so far this year, making it a true hell for those who work in the profession.

Román was getting into his car on the streets of Chilpancingo, Guerrero, when two people riding a blue motorcycle intercepted the journalist and shot him dead. When elements of the Mexican Red Cross arrived, they could only confirm the journalist's death.

State police officers arrived at the scene to cordon off the area, awaiting the arrival of the Public Prosecutor's Office officers, who collected evidence and took the body to the forensic service to carry out the expert work.

The prosecution said it is "conducting investigation and monitoring work to clarify the facts, so that the law can be applied to those responsible for various crimes."

Just a couple of hours earlier, Fredid Román presented his latest collaboration, entitled "State Crime without Blaming the Boss," where he analyzed the latest revelations of the Ayotzinapa case.

According to the organization Reporters Without Borders (RSF), Mexico is the second most unsafe country for journalists, only above Burma.

From this media outlet located in San Francisco Bay, California, USA, we deeply condemn the murders of Mexican journalists who seek to freely and safely carry out their journalistic work in Mexico, while, as fellow citizens, we demand that the government clarify, resolve and exercise the full weight of the law against those who took the lives of these and all the murdered journalists.

We also demand that all reporters, photographers, cameramen, writers, editors and other journalistic positions be protected by the State, because, although our media is focused on the Latino community in California, we have collaborators who carry out their work in Mexico and today their integrity is compromised.
