COVID-19: Crematoria in India create firewood shortage

Shortage of firewood forces crematoria in India to think of alternatives.

The new SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus that causes the disease COVID-19 - first recorded, according to scientific research, in a market in the central region of Wuhan, in China - has raised the number of deaths in India due to this easily transmissible disease that, in just one week, has increased the number of contagions by 2,550,000 people.

During the last 24 hours - as of today's cut-off by the country's health authorities - 382,146 cases of COVID-19 were counted; however, in India, the population believes that there are active cases up to three times more than the official figure. To this, it is also added to the fact that there are also deaths unreported by health authorities, as documented by BBC a week ago.

On the social networking site Twitter, users estimated more than 891,000 new cases on Tuesday, April 20, compared to the 352,000 officially reported; however, the first figure circulated on social networks was not confirmed or discarded by any media inside or outside India.

A month ago, it was estimated that 12 million people had the disease. Today, the number has grown by 45 percent, bringing the total number of cases to more than 20 million people.

Recently, it was announced that everyone over the age of 18 could be eligible for any of the vaccines against the new SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus; however, the country with the largest production and export of vaccines does not have enough doses to immunize its population.

Added to this is the problem of overcrowded hospitals, lack of beds in intensive care units to treat patients with severe cases of COVID-19. India has airlifted in shipments of medical oxygen tanks; however, doctors consistently report that medical oxygen stocks in hospitals are reaching critically low levels.

The Indian government urged the public to use face masks even in households where people who have been in contact with the outside world live, and to use them if it is suspected that someone in the household may have contracted the disease.

Sadly, the country reports a total of 226,000 deaths from COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic. A week ago, media around the world replicated the news that massive crematoria had been improvised in uninhabited lots that, so far, are working 24 hours a day.

With crematoria working day and night, given that the average in the last seven days is 3,572 deaths per day, the Asian country is also exhausting its firewood reserves.

The Hindustan Times reported The COVID-19 daily death toll has remained above 3,500 deaths per day ever since, with the number of COVID-19 victims remaining above 3,500 per day.

Now, not only is there a shortage of beds and medical oxygen in hospitals, or medicines needed to treat COVID-19 symptoms; but now, they are demanding the Forest Department to solve the latest problem in Delhi. Even, reports The Hindustan Times, the East Delhi Municipal Corporation has asked for a permit to be issued to use other fuels for crematorium pyres, so, in the face of a shortage of firewood, they are thinking of using dried dung.

Since the number of deaths has risen, crematoriums report that they have had to use, in just 24 hours, approximately 80,000 to 90,000 kilograms of firewood.

San Mateo Issues Support Checks for Businesses Affected by Pandemic

Pamela Cruz. Peninsula 360 Press [P360P].

Some of the businesses hardest hit by the pandemic - small restaurants, breweries and wineries - have begun receiving $10,000 aid checks from San Mateo County, which are intended to support local micro-entrepreneurs and stimulate the economy.

The county said the grants are part of an ambitious effort by San Mateo's Strong Fund.

The Fund was established weeks after the first "stay-at-home" order in March 2020 and has since raised relief funds for local small business owners, child care providers, nonprofits and others affected by COVID-19.

The Restaurant, Brewery and Distillery Assistance Program was initially developed in December 2020 as a result of a $1 million commitment by the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative to help small restaurants in South San Mateo and Palo Alto County.

That effort, led the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors, the San Mateo Credit Union Community Fund and the Silicon Valley Community Foundation to add $1.384 million in funding in January 2021 to expand the program throughout San Mateo County.

"This grant program is another example of San Mateo and the 20 cities and towns within the county prioritizing collaboration and working together, especially over the past 13 months to save as many small businesses as possible from the devastating economic impacts of the pandemic," said Board of Supervisors Chairman David Canepa.

The official added that every restaurant, brewery and distillery that survives the pandemic is a testament to the perseverance and skills of the owners and employees, who are often women, people of color, families and immigrants.

Through a release, the county detailed that the cities' aid funds go directly to facilities within those cities, while a portion of the Board of Supervisors' funds go to facilities within the unincorporated areas of the county.

However, he pointed out that even with the recent fundraising success approaching $4 million, only 400 of the more than 600 likely eligible applications will be able to receive the $10,000 grant.

For a complete listing of those businesses that were approved for the grant, you can access the website https://bos.smcgov.org/covid-19-emergency-proclamations-regulations-ordinances -and-aid-efforts-approved-approved-with-san-mateo-county.

Line 12, a history of failures and denunciations

Adrián Rocha. Peninsula 360 Press [P360P].

On Monday night, May 3, through the surveillance cameras of Mexico City, shortly after 22:20 pm, it was announced the collapse of a convoy of Line 12 of the Collective Transport System -STC- Metro, located south of the city in the Tlahuac district, which left a balance of 23 people dead, 68 people hospitalized and 25 missing.

During the morning conference of the President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the head of government, Claudia Sheinbaum, reported that the incident happened between Olivo and Tezonco stations "where one of the beams of the elevated Line 12 fell".

The capital's mayor pledged to provide all medical support and care to the victims, and also said that they are in search of "an international company with certification in both Metro and structural issues to make a technical expertise and that we can get to the causes of this unfortunate incident.

This incident was not received with indifference by the users of social networks that, at the same time of the facts, recovered the publications that showed the structural failures that were notorious and had already been denounced through the networks.

Among the most frequently mentioned was a post on October 12, 2020, from a Facebook page by the name "Ciberpapeleria AZULThe "report suggests "taking precautions", since "apparently the subway structure was becoming uneven", at the height of the Tezonco station and in the presence of "personnel carrying out the relevant evaluations".

https://www.facebook.com/462345523975661/posts/1503541853189351

Another Twitter account, belonging to user @RPachecoMX, posted on November 14, 2016 that "the #Linea12 one day was going to fall to shit."

The construction of the mega project of just over 23 kilometers long was announced on August 8, 2007 during the government of the now Foreign Minister of Mexico, Marcelo Ebrard Casaubon, with a cost of 26 billion pesos was inaugurated on October 30, 2012.

However, the history of failures and allegations of corruption in the so-called "Golden Line" is not new; a year later, in 2013, nighttime preventive maintenance and leveling of the tracks were announced in several stations, which forced them to end their operation one or two hours before their usual schedule.

In 2014, the then director of the Mexico City Metro, Joel Ortega, announced the suspension of service on the elevated section of Line 12 as a matter of safety for users.

During that period of government of the then Federal District, led by Miguel Angel Mancera, it was made public that Line 12 had construction deficiencies and errors in the development of the project.

It was after the M7.1 earthquake, which hit Mexico City on September 19, 2017, when serious affectations to the "Golden Line" were recorded and caused the closure of 6 stations.

In a press conference held today outside the Metro facilities, Héctor Homero Zavala, Labor Secretary of the Mexican Union of STC Metro Workers, denounced that "this tragedy could have been avoided if the authorities had listened to the workers.

Hector also mentioned that the current director, Florencia Serranía Soto is fully aware of the failures that the station had, since, upon her arrival, she implemented a program called "Adopt a station" and many officials are aware of the problems they face.

The union secretary also explained that the workers do not do the maintenance work, but an outside company does it and the only ones who belong to the union are the inspectors and drivers: "every day my fellow inspectors and drivers go through that stretch with a vibration and a sinking".

Just on Thursday, April 29, 2021, Nahum Leal Barroso was appointed head of the Subdirección General de Mantenimiento del Metro, which had been vacant for a year.

San Francisco at "Yellow" level as of May 6

Pamela Cruz. Peninsula 360 Press [P360].

Beginning Thursday, May 6, San Francisco will reopen indoor bars and family entertainment, as well as outdoor community sporting events and indoor saunas and steam rooms, after the city moved to a "Yellow" level Tuesday in terms of restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Thus, one of the most important cities in the state of California, will relax the guidelines for a variety of activities, including fitness, dining, offices, meetings and receptions.

The announcement was made by Mayor London N. Breed and Health Director Dr. Grant Colfax, who said San Francisco will reopen and expand additional state-permitted activities for counties with minimal COVID-19 transmission.

Based on the state's plan for a safer economy, San Francisco will open the few remaining closed sectors and expand others with some exceptions, as the city stays in line with what the state allows.

As of today, May 4, San Francisco has met the state's criteria to advance to yellow based on its COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations and other health metrics.

With this measure, San Francisco will expand nearly all activities to 50 percent of indoor capacity, unless the state requires more restrictive capacity limits.

"This is an incredible milestone for us as we move forward on our road to recovery, and it is possible because of how well we are doing in our efforts to vaccinate everyone we can in this city and how well the people of San Francisco have finished listening to public health officials," said Mayor Breed.

"Level Yellow means there are no more businesses that have to keep their doors closed in this city, and it means we continue to allow more activities to take place safely with more people," he added.

He also said that in order to maintain that progress, it is necessary for everyone in San Francisco over the age of 16, and hopefully soon over the age of 12, to be vaccinated.

"While we know we all have to continue to be careful, the more people who are protected, the more we can do," he stressed.

In addition to expanding activities, San Francisco is reopening for the first time businesses that have been closed.

This reopening will include indoor bars serving 25 percent of its capacity up to 100 people, indoor family entertainment such as ice and roller skating rinks, game rooms, playgrounds and golf at 50 percent capacity.

In addition to libraries at 50 percent capacity, indoor saunas, steam baths, and hot tubs at 25 percent capacity.

On the other hand, organized outdoor community sporting events may resume with capacity limits of 1,500 to 3,000 people depending on the vaccination status/proof of participants.

In addition, as announced on Monday, May 3, San Francisco will relax mask requirements in outdoor settings with fewer than 300 people, including outdoor dining, consistent with CDC and new guidance issued by the California Department of Public Health.

San Francisco's new COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations have remained at a consistently low level since early March 2021, and began to decline again in late April, allowing the city to meet the criteria for level yellow.

Right now, San Francisco is averaging 26 new cases per day, which is the lowest level since June 2020, before the first "summer surge." Meanwhile, for the first time in more than a year, the number of people in the hospital with COVID-19 has dropped below 20.

Currently, 72 percent of San Francisco's eligible population has received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine, nearly double the percentage of people vaccinated six weeks ago when the city was moving to orange.

In addition, 86 percent of city residents 65 and older have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine and 73 percent are fully vaccinated.

Learn how to make dumplings at home with this delicious recipe.

Cheese, meat or spinach ravioli in Italy; tiny Milpalta bean tamales in Mexico; Pierogi in Poland; Japanese pork gyozas; Argentine empanadas; and, of course, Chinese dumplings. Mankind has loved wrapping stuffed dumplings as a gift for millennia. Here is the recipe for making dumplings at home.

In the last week of April we started, together with Redwood City InternationalA trip around the culinary world through the cuisines of different ethnic groups that can be found in restaurants in this sunny city.

We landed our first stop at the Chinese station, and the favorite dish of choice was the delicious homemade dumpling. We were warmly welcomed by the hosts of the restaurant Crouching Tiger.

Like bread, dumpling, a delicate gift of humanity, probably emerged in different places at the same time. It may even have been created as a way to stretch food to feed more people, a Chinese version of the Mexican "echarle más agua al caldo" (add more water to the broth). In this case, combining cabbage, onions and vegetables with what little meat a family could get, as well as wrapping it up for individual bites doubles the quantity and satiates hunger.

These tiny crescent-shaped portions of stuffed rice dough take hours of cooking to complete. The recipe stays in the family and is passed down from generation to generation. They are called Jiaozi. And they can be assembled and cooked in different ways: boiled, fried or steamed.

Thus, the crescents "stick" to the bottom of the pan as they cook until water is added, and the steam is what releases them when they are fully cooked.

En algunas familias, el estilo de doblar el dumpling identifica a cada mujer que adquiere un asiento en la mesa de preparación para los dumplings, especialmente en el festejo del Año Nuevo Lunar.

According to legend, Chinese stuffed dumplings were invented during the Han Dynasty (206 BC-220 AD) by a man named Zhang Zhongjian, a "holy doctor". The event occurred when Zhang returned to his ancestral village during the winter after a long absence. During that season, he noticed that many of his fellow citizens were suffering from cold, especially around the ears.

To solve this problem, Zhang cooked a batch of mutton, a few medicinal herbs, shredded them and wrapped them in pieces of dough. He folded the dumplings to look like little ears, boiled them. To all the sick he gave two "ears" along with a bowl of hot soup.

Since then, cooks all over China, and then the world, have begun to imitate Zhang's recipe with additional ingredients such as vegetables and other types of meat to celebrate Chinese New Year.

If you were left with a craving after the above, or just want to know more about it, Peninsula 360 Press did a live webcast on the Lunar New Yearas well as a live cooking show about dumplings, both of which can be viewed here:

And boy, did the dumplings come as gifts!

To make these delicious dumplings at home, Peninsula360 Press shares the recipe used during the cooking broadcast. This recipe is for approximately 50 dumplings.

Ingredients for the wrap:

  • 400 grams of dumpling flour (you can use bread flour or use flour with high protein content)
  • 210 grams of water at room temperature
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Ingredients for the filling:

  • 1lb ground pork
  • ¼ (up to half) cabbage napa
  • 5 green onions
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh ginger (or ginger puree)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dark soy sauce (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 egg (Optional)
  • 1 teaspoon seasoning (chicken broth)

Dough instructions:

To make dumplings, you need to use rice flour, which we call 高筋面粉 (hard flour). If you can't find flour for dumplings, you can use bread flour. Just check the protein content before choosing a brand (a 10% is good). If you can't even find bread flour, I have a trick. You can use all-purpose flour and add 2 eggs and water to the flour to make it higher in protein. I like to measure it together because each egg is different. Here's my suggestion: for every 400 grams of all-purpose flour you'll need 205-210 grams of the egg and water mixture. Now you know the secret to the perfect dumpling wrapper. We can get started.

Measure 400 grams of flour for meatballs and add 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Mix and slowly pour in 200-210 grams of room temperature water. Use chopsticks to stir while adding the water. Gather all the flour and make a dough. Knead the dough for about 5-6 minutes or until smooth. Cover and let it rest for 20 minutes.

20 minutes later, knead it again for another 5 minutes. Cover with a slightly damp towel and let it rest for 1 hour. The reason we knead twice is to help develop the protein. This will ensure that the dumpling wrapper has a great texture.

While you wait, you can make the filling.

Stuffing instructions:

  1. Chop the cabbage finely. Add a pinch of salt and let it stand for 30 minutes. Squeeze the excess water from the chopped cabbage.
  2. Chop the onions
  3. Mix all ingredients in a large bowl
  4. Stir in one direction only for 6-8 minutes.

We make the stuffing of pork celery. It is very easy. Always stir in one direction only for 6-8 minutes and whisk the stuffing.

Put the filling in the fridge and let's take a look at the dough.

It should be softer and more manageable. Now it's time to divide the dough into many small, even pieces. Put the dough on the cutting board and sprinkle a little flour on it to prevent sticking. Roll the dough into a thick piece. Then cut it into thick strips. Be sure to measure it so that the strips are the same thickness. Once you're done, line them up. Cut it into small pieces. Use something to measure it too. It doesn't matter the length or width, as long as all the pieces of dough are the same size. I don't usually use a scale, but if you ask me, I'll tell you that each piece of dough should be about 11-12 grams.

Cover it with a slightly damp towel and we can start making the dumpling wrappers. Take a piece and flatten it with your hand. Roll it into a round wrapper with a thick center and a thin edge. The size can be big or small, it depends on the size of the dumplings you want to make.

Take some filling. Put it in the wrapper. Fold the wrapper in half and pinch it a little. Push both sides to the center and sew the edge. Stiffen it to make sure they don't open up during cooking. This recipe is enough to make about 50 -60 dumplings.

Use a sturdy frying pan. Add a little oil. Stir it around so that the oil coats the bottom. We're going to use medium heat to do this. The oil will start to heat up as you add the meatballs. Wait a minute or two and add 1/4 cup of water. Cover. Let it cook until all the water is gone. If the lid can be closed completely, leave a small hole for the steam to escape. Once all the liquid has evaporated, check the bottom for color. If it is well browned. You can plate them and serve them with your favorite dipping sauce.

Silicon Valley remains the city of choice for some of the world's most influential companies

Pamela Cruz. Peninsula 360 Press [P360].

After Time magazine issued its list of the 100 most influential companies in the world, the city of Silicon Valley remains a global favorite for companies that innovate every day in various fields.

The list, released at the end of April, shows that the Bay Area and California remain at the top of the list of cities with the highest influx of these types of companies.

Thus, 23 of the most influential companies are in the Bay Area, another seven are in the Los Angeles area and one more is in San Diego.

While there is certainly an exodus from the Bay Area due to the high cost of space, nearly half of the 64 U.S. companies on the list are based in California.

The list features San Jose-based Zoom, DoorDash in San Francisco and Los Gatos-based Netflix, three companies that have become necessary in everyday life.

Companies involved in online payment systems have also decided to stay in the Bay Area, with San Francisco-based Stripe and San Jose-based PayPal.

Other Bay Area tech companies on the list include social media giants Facebook, Nextdoor and Twitter.

They are joined by online class provider Coursera in Mountain View and fundraising platform GoFundMe in Redwood City.

It is impossible to imagine Silicon Valley without the giants Apple and Google. And in the field of accommodation supply platforms, Airbnb is located in San Francisco.

It's not all plain sailing

Although 1938, when Hewlett-Packard was founded outside San Francisco, is considered the beginning of Silicon Valley, the truth is that today there is greater discontent about the high cost of living, the low availability of housing, as well as high levels of crime.

Although it has been mentioned that some of the main competitors in this bay area could be Los Angeles or New York, the state of Texas seems to be attracting the interest of some technology firms, either the city of Houston or in Silicon Hills, outside Austin.

Since 2013 there is talk of strong growth in these areas, with many jobs in the sector commonly known as STEM -Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics-, as well as for its successful model of exporting medical services thanks to the Texas Medical Center cluster.

In early December, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, which brings together the software and business services activities after the Hewlett-Packard division in 2015, announced that it will move its offices to Houston, which is considered a hard blow in the history of Silicon Valley.

Antonio Neri, president and CEO of the firm, said they have "listened to the team members, who have said they want to spend less time in a physical workplace. And in response to this new future of work we have re-evaluated our real estate strategy.

Their new facility will be a 568,000-square-foot campus in Springwoods Village, north of Houston, which will include a gym and outdoor yoga areas. While the company will maintain an area of innovation in San Jose, it will make Houston its business and employment center.

This announcement was joined by Elon Musk, who, on December 10, announced that he was abandoning his residence in Silicon Valley and moving to the state of Texas, due to the "complacency" that has lately taken over the mecca of innovation and technology in the U.S.

He also announced his intention to move Tesla Motors' headquarters either to Nevada, where it has a battery factory, or to Texas, where it operates SpaceX.

Another firm that announced its intention to move a few days ago is Oracle, which after more than forty years in Silicon Valley, said it will move its headquarters from Redwood City to the town of Austin, a fledgling technology hub that is forming in the southern United States.

Biden Increases Number of Refugees He Will Receive This Fiscal Year to 62,500

"Our People Were Refugees Too" - see https://www.facebook.com/events/896390557130483/
Pamela Cruz. Peninsula 360 Press [P360].

U.S. President Joseph Biden announced Monday that he will increase to 62,500 the number of refugees to be accepted into the U.S. during the current fiscal year, which "erases the historically low number set by the previous administration of 15,000".

And that number, he said, did not reflect America's values as a nation that welcomes and supports refugees.

Through a statement, the president said that the new limit on admissions will also reinforce efforts already underway to expand U.S. capacity to admit refugees, so that the goal of 125,000 refugee admissions for the next fiscal year can be reached.

"It is important to take this action today to remove any lingering doubts in the minds of refugees around the world who have suffered so much and who are anxiously awaiting the start of their new lives," he detailed in the document issued by The White House.

Biden said the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program embodies America's commitment to protect the most vulnerable and to be a beacon of freedom and refuge for the world.

"It's a statement about who we are and who we want to be. So we are going to rebuild what is broken and we will work hard to complete the rigorous screening process for refugees who are already in the admission process," he added.

However, he detailed that the 62,500 admissions will not be achieved this year. "We are working quickly to repair the damage of the last four years. It will take some time, but that work is already underway."

He added that the budget he has submitted to Congress reflects his commitment to the goal of 125,000 refugee admissions in his first fiscal year in office.

"That goal will remain elusive. We may not achieve it in the first year. But we will use every tool available to help these refugees who have been fully vetted and who are fleeing horrible conditions in their home countries," he concluded.

India’s Skyrocketing COVID-19 Rate

Variants due to the spread can be destructive for humanity

India is struggling. The country’s COVID-19 rate is reported to be a horrifying 30%.

Coronavirus breaks chain of tiles with flag, domino effect. Pandemic related conceptual 3D
By Vinita Gupta.

Just a month ago, the Indian government believed that its people were somewhat safe from the COVID-19 virus because only 3% of the people were testing positive, despite relaxed social distancing measures since last October. Then the second wave hit with a vengeance.

From what I have heard from friends, family, and mid-level officials in India, the situation is devastating, and getting worse. The infection is expected to peak in mid-May. The most immediate need is preventing deaths due to a shortage of medical oxygen.

In the state of Delhi, the government’s supply of medical oxygen is only a third of what its hospitals need for its population of 20 million. At the same time, COVID-19 patients are coming to Delhi from neighboring states, placing additional pressure on medical resources.

Preeti, who designed my website, died of COVID-19 eight days ago. She was 30 years old, an IT designer living in the hi-tech town of Gurgaon on the outskirts of Delhi. Although she tested negative for COVID, she was struggling to breathe and died within a day. “She died at home. We could not find oxygen for her,” said her husband in a somber voice on a WhatsApp call.

COVID-19 does not spare anyone, young or old, rich or poor.

Some state elections just ended in India. In one of the most populous states of West Bengal in northeastern India, next to Bangladesh, Prime Minister Modi’s party lost by a huge margin, presumably due to the government’s handling of the COVID-19 crisis.

India spends only $100 per person on healthcare each year. One Delhi official shared with us that large hospitals should have their own oxygen plants. The cost of one oxygen plant for 200 ICU beds is $200,000. In other words, $1000 ($250 per patient) could save four lives in a month. US dollars go a long way in India.

The longer-term solution is vaccination, before the next surge hits. India has been able to fully vaccinated less than 2% of people, due to vaccine shortage.

Dr. Anthony Fauci has a sensible message about India. “Treat [the virus] like we are in a war.” COVID-19 can be defeated with proper measures. He recommends four weeks of complete lockdown and vaccinating as many people as possible and quickly.

The Serum Institute of India, the world’s largest producer of vaccines, is manufacturing Covid-19 vaccines Covishield (which is AstraZeneca of Oxford) and Covovax. However, the raw and packaging material are holding them back.

Just yesterday, on May 2nd, the Biden administration removed the export restrictions on such materials!

Consulate General confirms death of Mexican detained in Alameda

consulate general
Christian Carlos. Peninsula 360 Press [P360].

The Consulate General of Mexico in San Francisco issued a press release on the events of April 19 and confirmed that the deceased is a Mexican national.

A 26-year-old Mexican national was reportedly detained by police officers in Alameda, California. Moments later it was announced that the person had lost his life.

Today, in an information card from the Consulate General of Mexico in San Francisco, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Government of Mexico, reported that they have already contacted the mother of the deceased. In addition, the Consulate General stated that all necessary consular assistance will be provided.

The Consular Representation "has asked the competent authorities to share the progress of the investigations they are carrying out," in order to expedite assistance to the victim's family.

Finally, the press release reiterates that "the government of Mexico strongly condemns the excessive use of force and expresses its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased national".

Following the events of April 19, the victim was identified as Mario Gonzalez, 26. He was an Oakland resident and a father. He was arrested at 800 Oak Street in Alameda, California.

Meanwhile, the lawyers for Mario Gonzales' relatives dismissed the police version of his death. One of the officers immobilized Mario by placing a knee on him, which, after five minutes, left him breathless.

Bay sea level to rise half a meter by 2050, experts say

sea level
Pamela Cruz. Peninsula 360 Press [P360].

According to models used in the state of California's latest assessment of sea level rise, tides in the Bay could rise as much as .58 meters - 1.9 feet - by 2050, and as much as 2.10 meters - 6.9 feet - by the end of the century.

The situation does not look good for different cities that are located along the Bay Area, which already foresee possible flooding in the coming years due to storms that each year increase their intensity as a consequence, in large part, to climate change.

According to KQED, during the storms, East Palo Alto and other cities along the Bay shoreline already suffer from flooding and coastal erosion, which will only be exacerbated by the expected sea level rise.

"Sea level rise is one of the most certain effects of climate change. We know that much of that is already fixed, and we know that the seas will continue to rise at a steady and perhaps accelerating rate over the next few decades," said Mark Stacey, an environmental engineer at UC Berkeley.

In that sense, he pointed out that there are few differences between scientific modeling scenarios before 2050, however, these change drastically after mid-century according to the trajectory of greenhouse gas emissions caused by the human race.

And it is that several studies do not differ from this analysis, where they determine that the ice sheets of Greenland and Antarctica collapse.

"But if that happens, the Bay Area could see a sea level rise of more than 10 feet by 2100, what Stacey calls a "massive acceleration" 30 to 40 times faster than the rate of rise we've seen over the past century," the media outlet said.

"This extends beyond the scope of what we have thought about in our planning horizon in terms of the magnitude of change we will face in this region," he added.

According to a state assessment, aggressive reductions in greenhouse gas emissions can be substantially reduced, but not eliminated, and there is a risk of extreme sea level rise in California due to the loss of Antarctic ice.

This scenario, the study states, occurs in a context in which there are not enough global efforts to limit or reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
