Americans experience 2024 elections in an unusual way

Elections 2024 in an unusual way
The 2024 elections will unusually affect voter enthusiasm, so new and better strategies must be implemented to encourage citizen participation.

As the 2024 US elections progress, the electoral environment is experienced differently than in other years; with the use of social media and decisive speeches that sow doubts in voters, national political conventions are not enough to provide order and confidence in such an unstable environment.

In the United States, national political conventions are often predictable events whose outcome is determined by preceding primaries, in which party voters choose their candidate and delegates, present their platform or policies, and mobilize their voter base.

But how do they work in years with unusual circumstances? In this year's case, on the one hand, a divided party has been shown to be pushing for an open dispute because it does not agree with the candidate, while the other was held under the shadow of a violent act.

These events may change the electoral process, which has become different from other years and affects citizen participation, generating distrust and fear that will be reflected in the election results.

Conventions used to be held to discuss a candidate's abilities and assess what needed to be worked on, but now it has become a celebration, leaving aside the important issues, said Sherry Bebitch Jeffe, retired professor of Public Policy Communication Practice at the Sol Price School of Public Policy at the University of Southern California, during a briefing held by Ethnic Media Services.

The way elections are carried out has changed as the media and social networks have gained more weight. Previously, the way information was circulated and communicated required more direct contact in this process, something that has been lost and adds to the distrust, as mentioned by the former political analyst for NBC4 Los Angeles.

For his part, Jonathan Diaz, director of Voting Defense and Associations at the Campaign Legal Center, added that since the pandemic, the way of doing politics has changed, since people could not meet in person and many people spent a lot of time on their cell phones, so the importance of having a digital marketing specialist who was capable of carrying out an effective campaign through digital media was seen as a necessity.

The campaigns carried out on social media cannot be fully controlled and a lot of misinformation has generated hatred among voters and these rivalries are experienced between communities, something that was not so evident before, Diaz added.

Bill Schneider, professor emeritus at George Mason University's Schar School of Politics and Government, commented that Donald Trump has generated a discourse in which he claims that if he loses, there would be an act of fraud, and his supporters also claim the same, calling into question the electoral system.

“Trump was once asked if he thought the electoral system in the country was fair and he replied: it is fair if I win, if I win the system is fine,” concluded the professor at the University of California in Los Angeles.

Jonathan Diaz explained that the speech mentioned that Biden has many immigrant supporters, so they will look for illegal means to support him and as a consequence there will be fraud, although this is not true, the speech already calls into question the system.

"There are many messages from Trump's allies to reduce confidence in the elections and create doubts in the minds of society, so that if he loses, he can change the results in his favor," added the electoral law analyst.

In the case of Biden's withdrawal, Diaz believes that it should not modify the preferences of the voters, because even if they are supporters of BidenIt is known that in any event, Kamala Harris would be the one to take her already assigned position as vice president, so it would make no sense for someone else to take that place and the enthusiasm of the voters would not have to be a problem.

However, as Biden withdraws from the race for the presidency of the United States and giving their support to Kamala Harris, many have questioned the stability of the party, the elections, and even the electoral system, generating many questions that will have to be answered in the coming months leading up to an already unusual election.

The results of the worker housing inspections in Pescadero were presented to the community during the Farmworker Commission meeting, where proposals were made to address the urgent need for these employees to have a place to call home.

Last year, a task force was created to assess and ensure that housing for field workers and unincorporated agricultural/livestock land workers meets minimum habitability standards.

As of July 1, 170 properties were assessed, 128 of them being farmworker dwellings that provide housing for 343 residents. Eighty-one units were found to meet habitability standards while 47 did not.

Of the 47 units that did not meet requirements, 30 needed water supply corrections, 22 needed smoke detectors, 16 needed septic system corrections, 13 needed wiring/electrical repairs, 12 needed primary heat source, 10 needed ventilation, and 6 needed emergency exits and structural safety repairs.

Homeowners were given lists of fixes and time to complete them.

The task force also had proposals for reforms regarding farmworker housing. The first was a new ordinance to ensure that property owners submit to periodic monitoring to ensure that their water supply meets minimum portability standards.

The second is to amend the septic ordinance to reduce the minimum capacity of septic tanks; and the third is to make legal changes by the Local Coastal Program to establish a Coastal Development Permit connection for Farmworker Housing projects, in other words, making the project permitting processes faster.

It should be noted that 15 properties remain to be reviewed, and the final results are expected to be published soon.

At the same meeting, it was announced that the county will open an Office of Labor Standards and Compliance, which will aim to help workers report wage theft, among many other actions.

The plan for this office will be in phases: the first will focus on field, restaurant and construction workers; however, they anticipate that as the organization grows, they will be able to extend their aid to other industries.

Finally, a discussion was held about the possibility of having additional hours for a mobile clinic that can provide service to field workers.

The clinic is expected to open on Sundays for four hours for primary care for adults and their dependents.

It is planned to be stationed in the Coastside Clinic or in the Half Moon Bay BookstoreThe county plans to apply to the Health Resources and Services Administration to fund this expansion.

Biden leaves the presidential race and nominates Kamala Harris to be the Democratic candidate

Biden leaves the presidential race and nominates Kamala Harris to be the Democratic candidate
After a series of stumbles in his conferences, criticism of his performance in the debate he had with Donald Trump just under a month ago, among other issues or speculations, President Joseph Biden leaves the race for the presidency of the United States and nominates Vice President Kamala Harris.

Listen to this note:

After a series of stumbles at his conferences, criticism of his performance in the debate he had with Donald Trump just under a month ago, among other issues or speculations, President Joseph Biden left the race for the presidency of the United States and nominated Vice President Kamala Harris to replace him in the November contest.

With nearly four months to go until the US presidential election, the Democratic Party has yet to decide who will challenge former President Donald Trump, who is seeking a second term in the White House.

With a brief message on the social network X, the president announced that he would resign from the race, which he said would be to concentrate all his energies on his duties as president.

“My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” he wrote.

There, he spoke about supporting Vice President Kamala Harris to be the standard-bearer of the Democratic Party.

“My first decision as our party’s nominee in 2020 was to choose Kamala Harris as my vice president. And it has been the best decision I have ever made. Today, I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be our party’s nominee this year. Democrats: it’s time to unite and defeat Trump. Let’s do it,” he said.

After his address to the Democratic Party, the president addressed the citizens in a letter, where he recounted what has been achieved in the last three and a half years at the head of the country, highlighting the economy, investment and health, stating that "the United States has never been positioned to lead as it is today."

He also thanked the entire American people and acknowledged their support in overcoming a pandemic, the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, as well as the protection and preservation of democracy, and the revitalization and strengthening of alliances around the world.

“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President,” he said, “And while my intention has been to seek re-election, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country that I step down and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.”

He also stressed that he will speak to the nation in more detail about his decision at the end of this week.

Finally, in his letter he thanked all those who worked on his re-election, especially Kamala Harris, and the American people for the faith and trust placed in him.

“Today I believe what I have always believed: that there is nothing that America cannot do, when we do it together. We just have to remember that we are the United States of America,” he concluded.

It is worth noting that another name that is being strongly mentioned as being able to join the race for the Democratic Party is that of the former first lady, Michelle Obama, who enjoys excellent popularity among the electorate, in addition to possessing great charisma.

Today, both women are trending on social media, while political analysts predict that there will be division within the party when it comes to choosing the candidate who will compete against Donald Trump, who catapulted his candidacy after the attack he experienced.

Some even point out that the only one who could beat Donald Trump would be Michelle Obama herself.

A life without waste: a book to learn how to reuse what we already have

A life without waste
A life without waste is a book that teaches us about a world without the need for polluting packaging, that is, how to live sustainably. This book is written by the American Megean Weldon.

Imagine having a zero-waste, sustainable life with the power to create consumables without the need for polluting packaging. That is the idea of the non-fiction book “A Life Without Waste”, which has become this Saturday’s recommendation by Camilasbooks.

The reviewer highlighted that this book, written by American Megean Weldon, introduced her to a very interesting and current topic: recycling and reusing certain things.

Weldon provides tips, strategies, recipes and DIY projects to reduce waste in this accessible, beautifully designed and illustrated guide so everyone can get closer to a zero-waste world.

This book “provides a kind of route that makes this reading much more digestible and also allows us to organize and categorize well everything that has to do with recycling and reusing some things, and obviously reducing waste.”

Camilasbooks explains that the book is divided into different forms of various areas of our lives such as, for example: grocery shopping, the use of cleaning products, how we can reduce waste when we travel, when we give gifts, etc.

“One of the things that caught my attention the most and that I found very interesting about the author's perspective on this topic is not to basically throw away the things we have to replace them with reusable things, we should always use what we already have.”

“In short, this book is a kind of guide that shows us a little bit about how we can help. A little bit about what has to do with sustainability in being able to do a little bit about how it is in our way of consumption and also to better deal with what has to do with waste and how we can deal with it in a much more planet-friendly way.”

Global computer failure causes damage to various critical areas in the US.

Global computer failure

Listen to this note:

Nationwide, 2,219 flights have been canceled and 6,169 delays have been generated, according to flight tracker flightaware.com.

New business license tax in Redwood City to be discussed July 22

New business license tax in Redwood City to be discussed July 22
The Redwood City Council will discuss at its weekly meeting whether to approve proposed changes to the Redwood City business license tax aimed at maintaining essential services through increased revenue and reducing the tax burden on smaller businesses. Photo: redwoodcity.org

Listen to this note:

On July 22, the Redwood City Council will discuss at its weekly meeting whether or not to approve proposed changes to the city's business license tax with the goal of maintaining the essential services through increased revenues and reducing the tax burden on smaller businesses.

The changes to the business license tax, the city said, would help reduce a persistent annual deficit of $9 million.

The proposal was made following 20 meetings held with the business community, residents and other stakeholders to explore modernizing the city's Business License Tax, where significant feedback was obtained to restructure the tax proposal, the city said in a statement.

Based on this feedback, the proposed changes to the Business License Tax have been updated. The new proposal retains the current approach of charging businesses based on the number of employees in Redwood City rather than their gross revenue in the city; however, the structure has been adjusted to reduce the proportional tax burden on small businesses, he noted.

The full proposal and background information will be provided with the City Council agenda packet for the July 22 meeting, which has already been posted on Thursday, July 18 and is available by visiting the website  www.RedwoodCity.org/CouncilMeetings.

Key elements of the proposal include:

  • Continue to base business tax on per-employee rates, with different rates depending on the business category (such as retail/commercial, contractors, services, and professional services). By charging different rates for different categories of businesses, we can reduce the regressive nature of the current tax structure.
  • Maintain current per-unit charges for residential rental properties without rate changes, while ensuring that deed-restricted affordable housing units remain exempt from the tax.
  • Maintain current square footage-based charges for commercial rental properties, raising rates to those common in nearby cities.

“We believe this approach will balance the many interests the City has heard, including ensuring the business community pays its fair share of supporting Redwood City services while continuing to foster a business climate that is competitive with other cities,” the City Council explained.

The City Council will consider the updated proposal on July 22 in the Council Chambers (1017 Middlefield Road) at 6:00 p.m. Residents can participate in person (including by providing live public comment) or watch the meeting online.

The city said it is important to note that the City Council's role is to decide whether to put a ballot measure before voters to update the Business License Tax, so the city does not make the final decision on the changes.

If supported by the City Council, the measure would be on the November 2024 ballot for consideration by Redwood City voters.

The city noted that, like many communities in California and the Peninsula, the economic fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic permanently reduced funding for services and “sIn an increase in income, deep budget cuts will be necessary”.

In this regard, he explained that these reductions would degrade the services prioritized by the community, including public safety, street and sidewalk maintenance, and flood control.

Young Latino vote: the power and responsibility of choosing

Listen to this note:
