Study reveals that TikTok promotes eating disorders and self-harm in adolescents

TikTok promotes eating disorders and self-harm

The Chinese social network for sharing short, vertical videos, TikTok, has become increasingly popular among young people around the world. In the United States alone, two-thirds of teenagers use it for an average of 80 minutes a day. The situation becomes serious when, according to the report, A study, it has been detected that through the content generated, TikTok promotes eating disorders and self-harm.

The app, owned by Chinese company Bytedance, quickly delivers a series of short videos to users and has surpassed Instagram, Facebook and YouTube in the bid for the hearts, minds and screen time of young people.

Yet most people understand very little about how TikTok works or the platform's potential dangers, says the nonprofit Center to Counter Digital Hate (CCDH), which details a generational gap in usage and understanding.
