This Tuesday, June 7, the primary elections were held, and there are already preliminary results where it is known who are those candidates who will go to the general elections to compete for various positions at the federal, state and local levels.
The San Mateo County has done its homework in electoral matters, however, voter participation left much to be desired, since, at least in a previous count, only 14.6 percent of all those eligible to exercise their right to vote participated.
According to the Office of Mark Church, San Mateo County Chief Elections Officer and Clerk-Recorder, there were 433,539 registered voters, however, according to ballots received by mail and those returned to polling places and mailboxes on or before Thursday, June 2, 63,362 votes were cast, of which 6,481 were cast at polling places and 56,881 by mail.
Among the preliminary local results, provided by the county itself, the following stand out:
As the only candidate for San Mateo County Superintendent, Nancy Magée remains in office by obtaining 100 percent of the vote - 44,963 ballots cast in her favor.
In the case of the three contenders vying to become a member of the Board of Supervisors for the 2nd District, Carlos Piedra leads with 44.73 percent of the votes, a discrete advantage of only 1.55 percentage points over his rival Noelia Corzo, who so far has 43.18 percent of the electorate's preference.
For the same seat, but for the 3rd District, Ray Mueller takes first place with 35.81 percent of the vote, followed by Laura Parmer-Lohan with 30.54 percent.
For San Mateo County clerk-recorder, there were two challengers, with Mark Church, who retained the seat with 83.57 percent of the vote, winning in a landslide.
For the County Comptroller position, only his current representative was on the ballot, so Juan Raigoza has obtained 100 percent of the votes - 46,386.
As San Mateo County Coroner or Coroner's Judge, your current officer, Robert Jon Foucrault has garnered 99.98 percent of the vote.
The same is true in the case of District Judge, where the only one on the ballot is the current incumbent, Stephen M. Wagstaffe, who therefore received 100 percent of the vote - 47,366 votes.
In the case of Sheriff, the numbers show Christina Corpus as the virtual winner with 54.36 percent of the votes, followed by the current Sheriff, Carlos Bolaños, who so far has 45.62 percent of the electorate's preference.
Sandie Arnott, who currently serves as San Mateo County Treasurer and Tax Collector, will retain her position, as she was the only one to run for the position, obtaining 100 percent of the vote - 49,160 votes.
San Mateo County residents were also able to cast their vote on school measures that could be implemented in area schools.
Thus, for Measure C for the Belmont-Redwood Shores School District, Yes won with 72.72 percent of the vote; for Measure G for the Brisbane School District, Yes won with 69.59 percent of the vote; for Measure H for the Hillsborouhg City School District, Yes won with 59.47 percent of the vote.
In the case of Measure J for the Jefferson Elementary School District, the Yes vote won with 61.36 percent of the vote; for Measure E for the Millbrae Elementary School District, it fell short of the 55 percent required to pass, garnering just 50.84 percent of the vote; while Measure I for the Ravenswood City School District passed with 68.06 percent of the vote.
