Nearly 23,000 PG&E customers were without power in the Bay Area Tuesday afternoon due to strong winds that began blowing in the region.
More than half of the affected customers, 12,357, are along the peninsula, while 4,896 have blackouts in the South Bay and 4,331 have blackouts in the North Bay. There are 1,171 affected customers in San Francisco and just 142 in the East Bay, PG&E spokeswoman Tamar Sarkissian said at 1 p.m.
Downed trees and power lines have been reported throughout the region and people are advised to use extra care when driving, especially in taller vehicles.
The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for the Bay Area that will be in effect until 1 pm Wednesday, and high wind advisories have been issued along the region's coastal areas.
Along with the strong winds, snow is also expected to fall at lower elevations around the region later this week. According to the weather service, Bay Area elevations of up to 500 feet could see snow Thursday and Friday.
