It's time! Register to participate in the United States presidential elections

There is just over a year left until the United States presidential elections, which are scheduled for Tuesday, November 5, 2024; However, now is the ideal time to plan ahead and make sure you are ready to go to the polls.

And, to cast your vote, you must appear as a registered voter in the vote verifiers, and you must do so at least 15 days prior to the primary elections, which in the case of the state is March 5, 2024, so that the deadline is February 19. 

You can register or check if you are already registered through the following page https://registertovote.ca.gov/es/.

Requirements to register to vote in the state of California:

  • Be a citizen of the United States and a resident of the state of California.
  • Be at least 18 years old on election day.
  • Not currently in prison or on parole for having committed a felony. 
  • Not have been declared mentally incompetent to vote by a court.

Remember that foreigners cannot register to vote, including legal permanent residents with a “Green Card.”

In what cases should you register again or update your information?

  • If you permanently moved to another state, register to vote in the state where you now live.
  • If you moved within your state or changed your name, you must update your voter registration with your new home address and/or your new name.  
    • You should also update your driver's license or state ID card before the election, if that is the ID you will use to vote.)

You may need to update your information if you moved to another state very close to the presidential primary or general election date (check with the state where you previously lived). Otherwise, you may be able to vote by mail through your old state, although after that, you'll have to register and start voting in your new state.

Know the calendar for the 2024 elections

  • From this summer until the spring of 2024, debates will take place prior to the primary elections and caucuses of the political parties.
  • From January to June 2024, states and political parties hold primary elections and caucuses. 
  • Voters must be registered 15 days before the primary elections begin in their respective states (February 19, in the case of California). 
  • Between July and early September 2024, political parties hold national conventions to elect their candidates. 
  • In September and October 2024, the candidates participate in the presidential debates.
  • November 5th are the elections (the first Tuesday, after the first Monday of the month). 
  • In December, members of the Electoral College or electors cast their votes in the Electoral College. 
  • In early January 2025, Congress counts the electoral votes and January 20 is Presidential Inauguration Day.
