A man was arrested Tuesday for alleged food theft in Redwood City, on suspicion of robbing a Whole Foods Market by pretending to have a firearm.
Officers received a report of a robbery at the grocery store on Jefferson Avenue involving a suspect who suggested he had a gun, police said.
The suspect, Juan Linares Cesena, 32, allegedly entered Whole Foods and approached the cashier, demanding money from the register and pretending he was armed. The cashier handed over an undisclosed amount of cash and the suspect fled the store.
According to Redwood City police, a customer followed Cesena to an apartment on Vera Avenue and called authorities. At the same time, one of Cesena's relatives called 911 to say he had returned home with a large amount of money.
According to police, officers and detectives surrounded the home and confronted Cesena in an effort to deescalate the situation. Cesena was eventually taken into custody safely and booked into the county jail on suspicion of robbery, as well as an outstanding warrant.
