This week, a nonprofit organization began accepting applications from homeless people for affordable apartments in downtown San Mateo, according to San Mateo County officials.
For the less fortunate, San Mateo County-based MidPen Housing is seeking to lease 225 affordable residential units at the Kiku Crossing property located at 480 East 4th Avenue in San Mateo, county officials said in a statement Thursday.
The property will provide homes for 22 formerly homeless individuals, eight individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and 57 “general public employees,” including employees of the county and other public entities.
Officials said the remaining units are affordable with restricted rents designed to serve a variety of households.
To help with the property's construction costs, the county Housing Department invested more than $5 million in funds from Measure K, an extension of the countywide half-cent sales tax, officials said.
