Guatemala; "trampling of citizens" triggers national strike: Mynor Alonso

The national strike in Guatemala is an accumulation of aggressions against society and abuses of authority by power agencies, since investigations were initiated against the Semilla party, in which they seek to suspend the party to prevent its candidates from holding office. Photo: Community Press

A great national strike is taking place in Guatemala as a consequence of some aggressions against society and abuses of authority by different agencies of power.

These movements are an accumulation of situations, since quite a few investigations were initiated against the Semilla party, but not of any kind, since the laws are being ignored, this is what political scientist Maynor Alonso told Manuel Ortiz during the radio program Peninsula 360 Press in collaboration with Marcos Gutiérrez of "Hecho en California".

In many ways, he said, they are seeking to suspend the Semilla party to prevent its candidates from reaching office.

Approximately two weeks ago, the Public Ministry, through the Special Prosecutor's Office Against Corruption, entered the Supreme Electoral Tribunal, where the minutes documenting the electoral results are kept, and took them all out, without accepting the copies they were offered, the act was to steal them and the social consequences are now being experienced, the expert explained.

Although this does not affect the results of the past elections, since the authorities had already given a final verdict, what happened is an offense against the decision making of the citizenry, he warned.

"It has become a symbolic blow, it is a trampling on the citizenship that had been demanding that they leave the election results in peace", Maynor affirmed.

As a result of this event, the people became very angry and took to the streets to demonstrate their discontent. It was the indigenous mayors of the western part of the country who, mainly, have been present, the mayor's office of the 48 cantons and the auxiliary mayor's office of Sololá.

They decided to initiate a national strike on October 2, which so far is indefinite, setting up barricades to block traffic.

The movement began with 6 blockades, but the citizens saw these acts with good eyes and the next day there were already 24 blockades, which increased and by Monday, October 9, there were already 186 throughout the country.

As a result of these road blockades, the citizens are beginning to have food shortages, such is the case of vegetables coming from the outskirts, while the prices of basic products have increased considerably. Gasoline is also becoming scarce and many gas stations have had to close. All this is causing the country to begin a moment of instability.

What has been surprising is that people are not against the strikes, they are uncomfortable, but they support these movements.

The demand to end this strike is concrete, they are asking for the resignation of three people: the Attorney General, Consuelo Porras; the head of the Special Prosecutor's Office Against Impunity (FECI), Rafael Curruchiche; and a judge who is involved in acts of impunity.

Society has been surprised with a long national strike, and as the days go by, it is observed that there is incredible support for those who are in the blockades with food, supplies and others.

Given the perspective of the situation, Maynor Alonso explained, the first option is to achieve the resignations that are being requested, the second is that the government finds a way to calm society without the resignation of anyone, and finally, the third scenario is that if neither of the two groups give in, then the main courts of justice will have to begin to rule in favor of one or the other.
