San Mateo County coroner identifies boy swept away by wave at Martins Beach
A child who was recovered from the ocean after being swept away by a wave at Martins Beach in Half Moon Bay was identified as Yaretzi Biorato, 5, of Merced.

By Bay City News.

A child who was recovered from the ocean after being swept away by a wave at Martins Beach in Half Moon Bay last weekend was identified Wednesday by the San Mateo County Coroner's Office as Yaretzi Biorato, 5, a resident of Mercy.

Biorato was initially misidentified by the Coroner's Office, which corrected the name Wednesday.

The girl was swept away last Saturday by a surprise wave. Her grandfather, 54, disappeared into the ocean trying to find her and had still not been found as of Wednesday, according to the coroner's office.

The United States Coast Guard called off the search for the man after approximately 22 hours, after covering approximately 100 square miles.

Biorato was pronounced dead after being taken to a hospital.

That day, the National Weather Service had warned of an increased risk from dangerous surf known as sneaker waves or sleeper waves, which are disproportionately large coastal waves.
