After the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors unanimously called on Sheriff Christina Corpus to resign for, according to an independent investigation, retaliation, conflict of interest, abuse of power, and alleged use of racist and homophobic slurs, the Latino community expressed its support for the sheriff, as they consider the Supervisors' action abusive and a political coup to remove Corpus from office.
during the radio show For Free, this Saturday, November 16, people from the audience sent text and audio messages giving their full support to Corpus, who in addition to her duty as sheriff, they said, is a true community leader who cares about the underrepresented in the San Mateo County, the colored community.
"For me it is a type of discrimination because this position has always been ruled by men and now that there is a woman they are looking for problems; there are also men who abuse their power when they are in (the position), they should not do it and they should not start criticizing certain situations," said Mrs. Araceli Agustín.
The county resident also noted that Sheriff Christina Corpus "has the support of the community, not because she is a woman, but because of the work she has done so far," she said. "Whether she is in a relationship or not is a matter for her and the internal authorities, why should the community know about these things?"
He said that the community cares about the work that Corpus has done so far.
For radio listener Vicky Ávila Medrano, “Christina Corpus’ mission is to foster a culture of change, which is vital to creating a new era of policing that prioritizes the needs of the community and collaboration.”
He also questioned the supervisors for not validating the voices of those who elected and appointed Corpus to his position as sheriff.
“Why aren’t you validating the voice of the people who elected Corpus? Ask community members about his work, his performance and how the County has benefited?” he added.
On the other hand, she asked "not to break the model of diversity, inclusion and equity that Corpus itself is paving the way in San Mateo County "just because of the prejudices and assumptions of some."
“It is said that dirty laundry is washed at home. Take action on internal matters, fix what needs to be fixed, but do not 'uncover' the people of the community who agree with the development of Cristina Corpus's position,” he concluded.
Lorena Segovia, another county resident, said via text message that the issue has turned into misogyny, as she pointed out that the attacks also stem from the fact that Corpus is a woman.
Who are the people who are pointing the finger directly at the sheriff? What did they do that they are no longer in the corporation? Why were they given such a listening ear to start these investigations? Why is a judge who is not in office in charge? Were there not enough judges who could be doing the investigations and watching the whole process? In a man's world, they can't stand a woman being in charge. She, from the beginning, knew she was going to have problems, but not so big with men who didn't want these changes, and even less with a woman being the one in such a high position?
Likewise, Gloria, another radio listener, pointed out that the reprisals against Christina Corpus are due to a gender issue.
"The first comment they mentioned clearly shows that the witch hunt has been brewing for three years. I definitely think there is a lot of gender issues here," she said. "Isn't it a crime to be checking someone else's cell phone? The person who violated the privacy of the sheriff's or deputy's cell phone should be prosecuted."
The voice of the community, one that is often not heard, such as that of the Latino community, affirms that Corpus has been a faithful and worthy representative of the needs of those who live in the county.
There is still much to be learned from this case and Península 360 Press will be there to inform you about this and other issues that influence and affect the community.
