Strong winds start forest fires in San Mateo

South San Mateo County has been affected by wildfires sparked by high winds in different parts of the Bay Area, officials said.

According to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE), as of noon, the 10-acre North Butano fire was not at all under control, however, it is not threatening any structures.

While the 20-acre fire, reported at China Grade Road and Foxglove Lane, northwest of Boulder Creek in Santa Cruz County, is 50 percent contained.

The fire department covering San Mateo and Santa Cruz counties has received several fire alarms in the last 12 hours as the strongest winds began to be recorded.

According to the National Weather Service, the winds are expected to gradually begin to subside beginning at 6:00 p.m., however, so far they continue to wreak havoc in the Bay Area.

So far, high winds have caused power lines to fail and branches to fall.
