This morning, Joe Biden was sworn in as the 46th president of the United States, preceded by the mandate of the now former president Donald Trump, who lost the general election held on November 3 and, consequently, started an insurrection in the Capitol where Trump supporters violently broke into the enclosure where the electoral college votes were being counted to ratify Biden's victory.
Before President Joe Biden's swearing-in ceremony, the incoming president declared, "It's a new day in America."
Kamala Harris, vice president of the United States, was one of the first voices on Twitter to speak out, accompanied by a video empowering generations of African descent, Latinas and other ethnicities. "I am here for the women who came before me".
#BidenHarrisInauguration took the top positions on Twitter trends this morning to celebrate the inauguration of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. However, other hashtags also quickly trended celebrating the departure of, what outlets like CNN have called the "end of the era of domestic terrorism" with #ByeByeTrump, #TrumpsLastDay.
Then, the Inaugural Committee Biden, tweeted, "@JoeBiden is the President of the United States."
Lady Gaga, the contemporary Pop music icon, before her performance of the National Anthem on Capitol Hill, said, "My intention is to acknowledge our past to heal our present; and passionate about a future where we work together in love. I will sing for the hearts of all people who live in this land. Respectfully and generously, Lady Gaga," she said.
Gavin Newsom, governor of the state of California also joined the conversation saying, "It is a hopeful and inspiring day in America. Our country is founded on our ideal of democracy and the peaceful transition of power. Today, history was made with President Joe Biden and California Vice President Kamala Harris. Now, let's come together to be the America we know we can be.
Others on Twitter shared stunning images of how Kamala Harris is the first woman to take over as vice president.
Jennifer Lopez, who also attended Joe Biden and Kamala Harris' inauguration, tweeted, "What an honor to spend a few moments with these brave men and women. Thank you for your service and sacrifice. I will honor you today and every day. Tomorrow, I will sing for you and all Americans."
Minutes after the inauguration event, President Joe Biden tweeted from the official U.S. presidential account that had previously been held by Donald Trump and did not retain the tweets or followers it had accumulated:
Barack Obama, the first African-American president, congratulated Biden: "Congratulations to my friend, President @JoeBiden! It's your moment."
Hillary Clinton, a one-time U.S. presidential candidate, spoke about the vice presidential position now held by Kamala Harris: "It delights me to think that what seems historic and amazing to us today - a woman assuming the vice presidency - will seem normal, obvious and self-evident to her great-nieces as they grow up. And they will be right.
Former President Bill Clinton said the ceremony "affirms our democracy and celebrates the best America stands for.
