East Palo Alto honors Black History Month

East Palo Alto honors Black History Month
The East Palo Alto City Council will present a proclamation commemorating February 2024 as Black History Month at its next Council meeting, seeking to honor the rich heritage, resilience and contributions of African Americans to the history of the country.

The Municipal Council of the city of East Palo Alto will present a proclamation commemorating February 2024 as Black History Month at its next Council meeting, seeking to pay tribute to the rich heritage, resilience and contributions of African Americans to the country's history.

The roots of this celebration date back to Dr. Carter G. Woodson, a pioneer who overcame incredible obstacles to become the driving force behind the recognition of Black History Month.

Given this, the city encouraged all its residents to reflect on important dates in African American History during February, such as the passage of the 15th Amendment, the founding of the NAACP and historic moments in the civil rights movement.

"Let us collectively dedicate ourselves to fostering a community where the rights and contributions of African Americans, people of color, indigenous peoples and other groups are remembered, respected and recognized," the city stressed in a statement.

Additionally, in recognition of this historic month, East Palo Alto joins other cities across the country in celebrating Black History Month with various events, recognizing the past, and working toward a future of equality and justice.

In honor of Black History Month, Sign Gypsies is hosting trips for the senior community (60+) to the Domini Hoskins Museum in Redwood City and the San Francisco Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD).
