The University of California at Berkeley will have a new faculty for the first time in 50 years.
The regents of the University of California voted Thursday to establish the College of Computing, Data Science and Society to teach computing, data science and statistics to help solve some of society's problems.
The establishment of the new college comes after the creation of the Goldman School of Public Policy in 1969. A year before that, university officials established the UC Berkeley school of journalism.
“We are delighted to announce a new college at Berkeley that connects our excellent research and education in computing, data science, and statistics with many data-intensive disciplines across our campus,” Berkeley Chancellor Carol Christ said in a statement.
“Infusing the power of data science into multiple disciplines, from the basic and applied sciences to the arts and humanities, will help us fully realize its potential to benefit society, help address our world's toughest problems, and achieve our most visionary goals," added Christ.
UC Berkeley officials and others will celebrate the start of the new university Friday at 7 p.m. at the undergraduate graduation ceremony at the Hearst Greek Theater in Berkeley.
Google Senior Vice President Prabhakar Raghavan will give the keynote address, which will be broadcast live.
