About 1,000 fast food workers have been on strike since early Monday morning at San Francisco International Airport, according to the union representing the workers.
The workers, who are represented by Unite Here Local 2 and who began the strike at 3:30 a.m., are seeking a substantial wage increase and fully funded health care because their current wage of $17.05 an hour forces them to work more than one job, a union spokesperson said.
Workers say they haven't had a raise in three years, while employers are asking workers to pay hundreds of dollars more each month for health care, union spokesman Ted Waechter said.
"It's just not feasible," Waechter noted. "We're too far apart."
The spokesperson noted that the two parties have been negotiating for nine months.
Employers have maintained their desire to have workers pay additional money for medical care, however, Waechter assured that the plaintiffs will not budge on that issue.
Airport officials posted on Twitter this Monday morning that some restaurants and lounges may be affected due to the strike.
