All lanes of US 101 in Sunnyvale reopened nearly nine hours after a crash that killed three people and sent five others to the hospital Monday morning.
The chain reaction collision was reported around 12:30 a.m. on the northbound 101 Freeway, just south of Fair Oaks Avenue.
The California Highway Patrol said the accident was triggered when a northbound Ford pickup truck struck the center median and came to a stop, blocking some northbound lanes. Other cars then hit the van and also stopped in the lanes going the same direction.
Three people got out of the cars and were standing nearby when another vehicle collided with them, causing two to be thrown into the southbound lanes, where another vehicle struck them, according to CHP spokesman Officer Ross Lee.
A total of six vehicles were involved in the chain reaction.
Both directions were closed to traffic after the accident, but the freeway was fully reopened at 9:10 a.m.
